Would This Bother You? Donated Eggs and Expectations

Cynthia,

I understand your dilemma. I love to help those in need, but don't like to be taken advantage of. I am fortunate enough to have people who let me know when there are folks who can benefit from a gift of eggs. I don't make my family pay for eggs, but they know they don't get the biggest and the best. Interestly most that I give to are grateful and return the cartons.

Anything that is a large size or greater get sold. I sell them $2 per dozen if you return a clean carton. $2.50 if you don't want to worry with the carton. Duck eggs $2.50 with carton or $3.00 without.

You are a wonderful person for donating your eggs and caring about the welfare of others. I think it is alot to ask of the shelter to want you to deliver the eggs as well as donate them. IMO the shelter should get someone to come out and pick them up...another volunteer perhaps.

Try contacting a church in your area if you are interested in givng eggs to families in need. I am sure the church would know who is in need. Also maybe one of those families in need would have someone with the knowledge to repair your leaky roof and could use a few extra bucks from a job.

I don't get to town much either. I am happy to spend my days on the farm but spring is coming and I will be in the fields soon and will get to town even less.

That was very well-said. Thank you for the thorough overview. I wouldnt give to the church, per se, but possibly ask the pastor if he knew of a family we could personally contribute these eggs to.

I just told someone that I suggested to my DH, who knows many teachers in this school system, that he contact some of his teacher friends and ask if they know a family in need. Teachers often are privy to very personal information about their students and would probably know of someone who would need and appreciate some fresh food for their kids. I'm not sure if that would violate any confidentiality (not asking for specific info on them, though), but it's worth a try.

A wonderful idea.

I was not suggesting donating to a church, but donating to a family in need...that the church knew of.

I am not against donating to churches but that "christian childrens fund" that always wants you to "adopt" a child in need in a poverty sticken country really burns me. There are starving children and people in our country that we should be interested in caring for first

Anyone who saw Diane Sawyer's special on the poor in Appalachia knows that the poor are not only in the inner cities. I live on the bottom end of the Appalachian mtns, but I havent seen anything quite as bad as what she found a bit further up the mountain range, though my DH did say that some of those kids looked very much like the ones in the schools he's met. There are some places here that make me very sad when I pass by them. Just saying that I know we have some extreme poverty here in my own county and I should be able to locate someone in serious need, and probably very close to my own house.

If the shelter can't come and pick up eggs that are being donated, I would find someone in need to give them to or feed them back to the chickens.

Your eggs are not free to you, you have to invest your time and money in feeding and caring for your chickens.

You can offset the feed bill by feeding extras to the chickens, so why would you even consider giving them away AND delivering them?

I think you are a great person for donating these eggs, but would draw the line when it comes to delivery.

Oh Cyn,
I am sorry you were treated that way. Its a sure sign of the times. GREED! He could have worded it differently...like...is there a chance you would be able to deliver "X" ammount every week or so...if not, could we possibly pick up "X" ammount every week or so? That would not have been so greedy. I think asking the teachers is a great idea. I saw Dianne Sawyers show on those poor kids as well. I cried so hard, then thought about it, and cried some more. The problem with the news is...its always about a 3rd world country, when we have the same thing going on in our own back yards...just not "popular enough" to make the news. I hope the teachers will be able to help you get some of those delicious eggs, to a NEEDY family...not GREEDY family.
Thanks for being who you are Cyn. You are a GEM!

cynthia, have you tried the salvation army?....I know they probably dont have one in blue ridge but I know they have their fairgrounds in Jasper....they cook for the homeless and I am sure they would like some of the eggs....also have you advertised on any papers around there to sell your eggs?....around here I can find all kinds of people that want fresh eggs but I know it is different there....

Jasper is an hour away from me or the Salvation Army would be an excellent idea, gapeachy. I'm sure that when spring and warmer weather hits, we'll be selling more, but even then, with the amts we are getting now, I bet there will be many, many extras. I haven't advertised but I think consulting a few of the teachers in the middle and high schools here is the next best step to take.
I have a neighbor who buys 3 dozen to take to her daughter in FL when she visits her and I usually give them an extra dozen for being a good customer plus she buys several dozen for herself as well; one other neighbor used to buy lots from me because she was a baking fiend, but the prices of things have made her cut back on her baking, even. Even so, getting close to 3 dozen every day adds up very quickly!
Thanks for all your suggestions and comments. I'll let you know what other outlet we find for these extra gems we have.
