Would you do this?

I would say no. It may be the Asian way of eating, but he can take his business elsewhere because I think it's disgusting. I have a hard enough time eating boiled eggs already.

so, because you don't view shrimp as "worthwhile" then it is ok to boil them alive, but other animals are too cute or ??? to be cooked in certain ways?

If you work in a healthcare facility and your job is to feed him, then you might end up having to do it anyway.

If you don't want to, don't sell them. But, since you asked, nope I wouldn't have a problem with selling them. Feeding them to someone, no. Though I wouldn't have an issue with cooking them either. But, I wouldn't want to be feeding someone anyway, so I don't work in assisted living or the healthcare field.

I would have no problem eating a baby chick. I would let it hatch first, then cull it. Not BOIL it alive. I don't know how shrimp are cooked, I usually find them dead, and raw. I have never seen shrimp boiled whole, and alive. I just figured shrimp died because of causes while packaging, or they had there heads removed while packaging. I take back what I said about boiling live shrimp. I would never do it. I just started to picture what shrimp swimming in steaming, boiling water would look like. Kinda SCARY!

There is a HUGE difference between boiling crustaceans and boiling live eggs.

Crustaceans (shrimp, lobster, crawdads, etc) are all prepared by boiling them alive. This is done by bringing the water to a hard boil and then putting the crustacean in. It dies instantly and painlessly. They also have a much more simple nervous system than poultry, and are not believed to feel pain in the same way anyways.

Eggs on the other hand, are boiled differently. Typically the egg is placed in cold water, which is slowly brought up to boiling temperature. This would be a slow and excruciating death for the chick. And even if the water was brought to a boil before submerging the egg, it would still take several moments (if not more) for the temperature of the egg to get hot enough for the chick to die. So either way, that chick is going to be in a world of hurt before it finally slips away and out of it's misery.

I am all for using animals for human consumption, but humane dispatch is a must for me. And I just don't see how balut can be cooked without causing the chick significant pain.
