Wounded duck

Yes, the garage is secure. And her shank wound was impossible to wrap, so we cleaned and disinfected it. The flies were still bad, so we have now mosquito-netted her entire cage. I don't believe they can get in anymore! She won't put much weight on her hurt foot tho. I feel so bad for her. But at least I know I am doing everything I can.

Another thing, when I am out there and checking on her, she has her mouth open like she is trying to quack, but she doesn't. Odd. Why?

I don't know why she is doing this, maybe someone else that has had a duck with an injury simiular to yours will be able to help you there. Glad to hear you took care of the fly problem. Thats all you can do now is give her supportive care, keeping her wounds clean and making sure she is eating and staying hydrated. They are amazing animals can can make complete combacks from the brink pretty quick too. I imagine she is in pain and probably still shoky so it may take a while till you see alot of improvement. I am going to see if you can give ducks baby aspirin, not sure. Be back Aspirin dosage usually recommended on BYC, it's 5 regular (325 mg) aspirin (NO SUBSTITUTES) crushed per gallon of water. (or 1 and 1/4 aspirin per quart). Or 1 baby aspirin (81 mg) per cup of water - just be sure you're using pure aspirin and nothing else. And don't mix anything else in the water at the same time without first checking to see if okay.
found this in the BYC archives. you have to be extremely careful what you give water fowl, they are very sensitive to meds.

She ate more peas, drank water, and laid an egg! She quacked at me as well. She still doesn't wanna put much pressure on her leg. I feel so bad! And NO FLIES WERE IN THERE!!!!!!!!

Wow--I just got in on this thread. Poor girl! But ducks ARE amazing, aren't they? Still laying eggs--type A personality, obviously. Mine stop laying for the puniest reasons--I change their bedding, they lose a feather, the water isn't cleaned for a whole day, the temperature drops a degree, the temperature goes up past 80 degrees, etc. Prima donnas. Your girl, clearly, is an overachiever.

Glad she's doing well. You may want to consider finding her a companion sooner rather than later, especially if there's a way to set her up in the garage nearby but not in the same enclosure. Ducks are such social animals and, like humans, keeping their spirits up is important to their healing. With company, she may get better faster, and she'll certainly be happier. Just be sure you can keep them separate if necessary, but where they can see each other.

Good luck & thanks for keeping us updated.

Ok, so we just went out and took off the neck bandage. It is drying and scabbing nicely, and since the flies can't get to it we let it get some air. She hated that bandage! She is so much happier now. Still not putting much weight on the leg. And at the moment I am in contact for a buddy or two!
