Wounded rooster, how to treat?

It looks as though my neighbor is fighting his fighting cociks but not treating them. One gorgeous rooster looks pretty bad, with a wound on the back of his head. I'm not sure I can get close to him or catch him to treat him, he's a bit wild. And he's not my rooster. (though I feed him every day) Any suggestions?

Is it legal where you live to fight cocks? Certainly if it is there must be animal rights against leaving the animals wounded. It doesn't matter in the long run if you treat one cock, as the problem will not be solved.

Well of course you'd first have to catch him. If you can clean out the wound make sure there isn't dirt in it, pack it with triple antibiotic ointment without pain reliever and if you can spray it with a red kote to protect it from flies. Otherwise maggots can get in there and

. Other than that if he's pretty wild I don't know what else you could do. It nice that you care even if your neighbor doesn't.

It's illegal here and I have to be careful since these are neighbors but I have calls in to animal control and the humane society. I can't stand to see that beautiful bird in such bad shape. I may have someone else come here and catch him, since I want to be discreet. How long would it take for maggots to be an issue?

Squirting it real good with saline solution is probably the best thing to do. Ointment isn't a bad idea, but it needs to be cleaned 1st. Saline is best for cleaning. (I use the stuff for contacts, it has a nice squirter)

If you can't catch him, you can put a little teryimycian (sp) in some water for him to drink. Might help prevent infection, or use a squirt bottle with Saline in it to squirt his head if you can lure him close with some bread etc..
