After a couple days hanging out in the coop, I got too bored to stand it anymore. Prim found a shard of glass in the back field that we decided to use as a mirror.
Onyx saw his reflection and gasped. Apparently he thought he either looked really bad, or really good.
I step up to the mirror next. I see my grayish bluish wings and shoulders. My foot feathers are getting really big and they look like sweepers on my feet. My wings are almost fully in and I have a couple of feathers on my back and face. I am still very large and I still have a broad stance.
We finished looking at ourselves in the mirror and set off to go on a much-needed bug hunt. I was craving for a grasshopper for days!
We noticed that Lilly was singing, but no one could really make out her words.
I reached the tall grass last. I seemed to be a bit sluggish today, and I just want to fall asleep. Maybe Im coming down with something. I hope not.
The chase is on. I see a fat, green grasshopper and go in for the kill! It shall be mine!
Oh yeah, I gave up being a master bread hunter and decided that grasshoppers are more worth it.
Anyway, I spotted my prey and pounced on it like Jasper showed me. I caught the little bugger and ate him up. The score was one, Cloudy, zero, everyone else!
Im hunting for my second grasshopper when I hear a rustling in the bushes to our left.
Hello? Is anyone there? I call into the greenery.
I get no answer, except for another rustling. I look up and see nothing but a bush. Maybe its just the wind.
I continue hunting, catching a second grasshopper. Everything is fine, until I hear another bush moving. It cant be wind this time. There is no wind blowing. I am a bit frightened now, but I kind of shake it off.
The bush rustles again.
Whos in there? I yell.
No answer.
Hello?
Again, no answer.
I give up.
I continue hunting and decide to make my way over to where Prim, Onyx, Daisy, and Lilly are standing. The only problem is, that they are gone!
Guys, where are you? I shout.
I dont get an answer, which worries me. What if theyre in trouble? How am I supposed to find them in this grass?
Lilly? Onyx? Prim? Daisy? Where are you? I call into the weeds.
I hear a bit of shaking in the bush to my left. I whirl around, but nothing is there. I am starting to panic. Neither of them is in sight and this was supposed to be out meeting site. They shouldve been here at least five minutes ago.
A lot of thoughts are running through my mind right now. What if something got them? What if they got lost? How do I help them? What am I supposed to do?
Im in the middle of a clearing, spinning around in circles, trying to decide what in the world I should do now.
My friends are missing, I am alone in the middle of a grass field, and there might be something dangerous out there, ready to pounce on me, too. What is going on?
I start to cry, but decide it would be best to be quiet, just in case something is out there, trying to find lunch.
Will I ever find my friends?
I decide to continue looking for them, but be quiet about it. I venture farther into the grass and behind a bush. I sneak into the clearing and see a raccoon! A million terrible ideas pop into my head!
I sneak around the clearing to the other side of the bushes only to see Onyx in the mouth of the raccoon! I start to cry, thinking he is dead, but then he clucks to me, Help me!
I know I have to do something quick, or Onyx will be raccoon meal! I run to the other side again and find a big rock in the ground. Its large enough to take out a raccoon, but small enough for me to pick up.
I grab it and hurl it into the clearing, hitting the raccoon right in the head. He drops Onyx, who doesnt look like he can move.
I panic and pitch another rock, that gets the raccoon in the back. It lets out an angered roar and takes off into the weeds, leaving Onyx in the clearing, half-dead.
I race over to him.
What happened? I scream.
It got me while I was trying to defend Lilly, Prim, and Daisy. I was just trying to be as brave as Jasper, but I let them down, he explained.
What do you mean, let them down? I said, frantically.
I got taken and they scampered into the weeds. I dont know where they went. I dont know if theyre safe, he cried.
Can you stand up? I was crying, too.
Yeah, I think so, he groaned.
He stood up and shook out his feathers.
Why does everything bad happen to me? First the rock, now this! he yells.
I dont know, Nyx, but youve got to be more careful! I cry.
I know, Clouds, I know, he sighs.
Do you have any idea where the rest of them could be? I ask.
Yeah, they went that way, he said, pointing to a trodden-down pathway.
Lets go. Are you sure youre ok? I ask, one more time.
Yeah, my wing and foot just got bitten, thats all, he answers plainly.
Ok, I finish. We set off walking down the path, not knowing what would be waiting for us on the other end. I was every bit as frightened as I was when I came across Onyx. What if everyone else was gone? What if I was too late?
I hop over twigs as we venture deeper into the grass, thats getting taller, and taller. Im scared, but I cant show Onyx that, after all hes been through. He doesnt even look frightened, which is odd, after what just took place. I guess hes the kind that doesnt show fear. Its like he just forgets about it.
This path is longer than either pf us expected. We come to another clearing were we see a huddle of chickens!
I run to them, excited to be finding my friends!
Guys! Its ok! Were here! I call.
The huddle disbands and I see that everyone is there, and safe. Prim, Daisy, and Lilly are here. I am here, and so is Onyx. Everyone is fine, except for Onyxs minor injuries and Prims foot. She stepped on a sharp rock, running through the grass, and it punctured her foot a bit. Shell be fine.
Were so happy that everyone is safe! We are so scared, though, so we head straight back to the coop. Suddenly, Onyx speaks.
You know, that coon wasnt holding onto me very tight, he explains, Its almost like he thought I was his young or something. Its not like it wanted to eat me or anything. Its strange.
Yeah, thats strange alright, but thanks, for trying to stand up for us. You risked your life to save us, Prim said, sweetly.
No problem, guys. Really, he says, patting Prims shoulder.
Im glad youre ok, I say.
Im glad you came and saved me. If you didnt, the coon mightve changed his mind and had me for lunch! Onyx chuckled.
It was nothing, really. Just me and a rock, thats all, I laugh.
I think everyone just wants to forget about this. As soon as we get back to the coop, we tell Jasper what had happened. He congratulated Onyx for his bravery and warned us not to venture out too far in the next week or so.
I am tired, and so is everyone else, so we find a perch and go to sleep. Goodnight.
