Almost two weeks have passed at the farm and I finally have a decent amount of wing feathers. They are soft and smooth and very fluffy! Theyre also a pretty blue color that is very unique. I like them.
Onyxs feathers are just a bit bigger than mine and they are black and shiny. He is also a bit bigger than me now, too.
Primrose is small and dainty still, but her feathers are coming in nicely. They are pure white and she has more tail feathers than the rest of us.
Daisys feathers are blackish brown and she has some pattern on them that I cant quite tell what it is. She is still an average sized chick and still has that bit of a temper.
Lilly is bigger than Prim, but smaller than me. Her feathers are a creamy white with amber coloring on them. She told us that she was an Amber Link and that she would look like the hen that chased us earlier. She is sweet, but a bit wacky.
We are hanging around in the barn, since it is rainy today. The other hens have finally started to accept us, instead of ripping our feathers out, every chance they get. Jasper protects us, but when he gets mad, you wouldnt even want to be in the same barn as him!
Im sitting on a perch with the gang. I hope someone will start a conversation soon, since its so boring in here. Id much rather be romping around in the soft grass, catching bugs with Onyx.
I finally fall asleep, after hours of boredom. I dream of mealworms on a bright spring day. The only downside to spring is the rain.
When I wake up, I see that everyone is gathered at the doorway. The rain has let up for now, but it doesnt seem like its going to last.
I get up quickly and make my way to the door.
Whats going on guys? I ask, poking Prim.
The humans are coming, she yawned.
What? Why? I ask.
I dont know, something about treats, she says, shrugging her shoulders.
Oh, I say, slouching. Im about to drift back off to sleep.
Boy, I couldnt probably sleep through whats happening now! The humans are approaching with bags full of bread! I jump up and down, in an attempt to see over the tall hens, but theyre just too big for me to see over.
I see a white thing zip across the coop. Everyone runs for it, including me. I get trampled on and pushed out of the way.
Then, another piece is thrown. This time, everyone that is not fighting over the first piece is going after the second.
This time, I am smarter and hang back.
Another piece is thrown and while everyone else is obsessing over the first and second, I have a chance to go for the third. It is bigger than the rest, too.
I grab it and yell for my friends. We find a cozy corner and share the bread where no one else can get to us.
I spit the bread into five equal pieces, one for each of us, and we sat and ate quietly while everyone else was being pushed and trampled on fighting for the rest of the bread.
The bread was so good! I will eventually become a master bread hunter and get some for my friends and I to share, every day!
Well, Ive still got a long way to go.
The weather is nice and clear today, so we are allowed outside. We free range in peace now. I am chasing after bugs with Prim, having a contest to see who can catch the most. Im winning.
My favorites are grasshoppers. Theyre so much fun to chase after! Jasper taught us how to sneak up on them and go in at them swiftly.
Every time Jasper catches one, or finds food, he calls the girls over to get a share. I rarely get to snatch anything up because of all of the bigger chickens, but I still get a share.
Onyx, Prim, Daisy, Lilly and I are chasing after bugs in the high grass now. Its best pickings in there. We normally catch a lot of bugs there, but the big chickens dont like to venture too far away from Jasper, so they never come in here.
I am enjoying myself, running and catching delicious bugs when I hear Jasper let out a loud, shrill squawk. What was that all about?
We all look up, to see the hens raise their heads in alarm. Jasper is standing at attention. What in the world is going on here?
He lets out another cluck and all of the hens dash into the coop. I look around frantically, trying to see whats wrong. Then I look up into the sky.
Oh no. What I see just about gives me a heart attack! Its a chicken hawk, on the hunt for its next meal!
Run! I yell.
Go, go, go! Onyx chants.
We make a mad dash across the field. The hawk is pursuing us as Jasper stands out in the open, ready to defend his flock.
Come on guys! Well be supper! Daisy shouts.
We dive into the coop, just as the hawk sweeps down to catch us. It dips down, and then soars back into the sky.
Just when I think its over, it only gets worse.
The hawk circles around and sets its eye on Jasper, standing tall, defending his girls.
Jasper, look out!" one of the hens squeals.
The hawk swoops down and plummets toward Jasper! Im praying in my head that Jasper will move. No, it cant kill him!
The hawk is coming closer, when Jasper makes the most menacing noise, scaring everyone, including me. He is ready to fight the thing no matter if he dies or not.
I start to cry, when Jasper kicks up at the hawk, sending it flying into the air. He got it with his spurs. It shrieks and flies away. All is clear for now.
They feel safe enough to return to the field. Jaspers left wing is bleeding, but not enough to make anyone nervous. All of the hens rush up to him and make sure he is ok. I decide to stay in the coop, to afraid to go back out. That was the most traumatizing thing that's ever happened to me!
