Chapter12

In the next couple of days, I notice that I am almost fully feathered, and so is everyone else! We are beautiful! I think a couple of the Amber Links are jealous, because they often smirk at us. It’s not very nice, but, hey, it’s the price you have to pay for being a show bird.
We are free ranging in the field, not the tall grass. I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to go in the high grass again, after what happened the other day. I don’t think I will.
Jasper walks over while we are scratching in the grass, searching for little bugs.
“Hello. How are you guys today?” he asks.
“We’re fine, thanks. How are you?” Prim answers.
“I’m fine, but I have news to deliver to you all,” Jasper says.
“Oh, really? What is it?” Daisy chimes in.
“Tonight, there is going to be a big storm. We must all prepare or someone will die. Be inside by sunset. You have been warned,” Jasper explains.
“Oh, a storm! Really, after all that’s happened in the past couple of days! So you’re telling us that things could get worse?” Daisy rants.
“Calm down, young one. You will be fine, as long as you listen,” Jasper responds.
“Fine,” Daisy sighs.
“Ok, well, I best be on my way. We are collecting extra seed just in case the storm lasts. Bye now!” Jasper says, as he walks away.
I’m a bit angry at Jasper. I know its not his fault that there’s going to be a storm, but he’s the one that delivered the news to us. Well, I guess that is for our own good.
I’m afraid that is Daisy keeps up that temper of hers, she’s going to get beaten up one day. I try to tell her to calm down, but she just won’t listen.
I sigh and set off, collecting bugs and eating them along the way. There is a berry patch along the fence, but all of the hens are over there. I don’t really want to go near there because of the hens, who will be very greedy over the berries. They are even fighting with each other to get the sweet berries. Maybe when they leave, I’ll sneak over and see if they dropped any. I’ve only had a berry once, and it was delicious!
I’m not very worked up over the storm because we should be safe in the barn, right? I mean, we sleep there every night and no predators can get in at us.
We’re finishing up when we hear thunder in the distance. It shocks me and I turn to my friends.
“We better head in early. The storm’s going to start soon,” I warn.
There’s more thunder and I catch a glimpse of lightning over the hill.
“Let’s go!” I pressure.
The thunder is louder and its starting to rain.
“Guys!” I yelp.
We take off running into the barn, along with all of the hens. We get pushed to the side and get soaking wet. So much for getting berries.
Finally, after we make out way into the barn, we can barely even find a place to perch!

Chapter 13

The storm is roaring outside and I’m huddled up with Daisy, Prim, Onyx, and Lilly. I’m too afraid to look outside at the storm, so I have my head under my wing, trying to sleep. It’s impossible though, because of the thunder.
I’m very hungry right now because the big hens are blocking the feeder and they peck us every time we try to go over to eat. We can’t go outside and the hens are also guarding their food stock.
I’m thinking of going over to ask Jasper for food, but I’m afraid he’ll get angry. He told us to be prepared, but we were too busy playing to listen.
It’s getting very dark and the storm is still roaring, but I desperately need food. I get up one more time and walk over to the food. Flower comes at me and plucks one of my feathers.
“Stay away,” she growls, “This is ours.”
“Ok, ok!” I whimper and scoot away.
I stare out the coop door. I know I have to do this, or I will starve. I need food! Should I? Will it be worth it?
My hunger gets the best of me. I dash out the coop door and everyone gasps. I ignore the shouts as I make a mad dash to the berry bush. The rain hurts as it comes down onto my skin and the thunder is deafening.
I can barely see a thing and realize that I have no idea where I am. I can hear Jasper shouting at me, but I don’t look back, wherever back is.
I am crying and I am so angry I even left the coop. I find a tree and run under the base for shelter. My friends are gathered at the door and they are shouting at me, too. I feel very ashamed, though.
A huge bolt of lightening lights up the ground long enough for me to locate the bush. I run in a straight line, making sure I don’t go of course.
The rain is stinging my back and the wet ground causes me to slip a couple of times, but I make it. I step on a thorn, though and my foot is bleeding profusely. It hurts like nothing I’ve ever experienced, but I made it.
I pluck as many berries as I can carry. Hey, I got to make this ordeal worth it, right?
I run as fast as I can back to the coop. Everyone stares at me and murmurs as I walk past to my spot on the perch. I’m sharing the berries with my friends, and no one else.
Suddenly, Jasper walks over.
“What were you thinking, you could’ve been killed!” he shouts.
“I… I needed food. I was going to starve,” I whimpered.
“You have no idea what starving feels like,” he stammered. Suddenly, he became totally quiet. Everyone in the coop was staring at him, and he looks like he’s about to cry! What happened?
I ignore the pounding pain in my foot and watch carefully as Jasper looks around the room. He opens his mouth to speak, but shakes his head and walks away sullenly. Nobody follows him, but we all watch carefully.
He perches on the farthest perch from us and bows his head. He shuts his eyes and goes to sleep
