Wrong Delivery - Got Barred Rocks STR Chicks and not Buff Orp Pullets

I most certainly will keep your name Kelly. Love the pics of you animals and your daughter with the chick. I'm learning some of the pro's and con's on ordering live chicks vs. hatching out. The idea of a hatch lingers in my mind

2hot2chicken - I didn't see your reply until now. I enjoyed your description of your BR. I'm keeping the BR's. I'll probably end up with a few hens and then the new Buff Orp pullets will ship. Will the two breeds of hens do okay with each other???

Well, I don't think you'll be disappointed by the Rocks - I really do love mine and they were from a hatchery as well!

The offer stands for the Orps, so keep my name :)

Here's Daddy -

Here is what hatched this morning -

Your BO Roo is GORGEOUS!! I have a hen that I love and would love to allow her breed with him and hatch out some pretty babies!! Again he is beautiful!! The wattles are huge! LOL Sorry I just couldnt get over how pretty he was!! :D

YES!! THIS JUST HAPPENED TO ME, TOO!!

I ordered 15 straight run Buff Orpington Bantams. On Feb 23, I recieved a box with 16 little yellow peeps and 6 larger black chicks (barr rocks). I assumed the black chicks were "packing peanuts". However, now that the feathers are coming in on my yellow chicks... I can see clearly that I do NOT have buff orps (no idea if they are even bantams)- black fleck feathers growing in!

I don't have room for another 15 chicks, if the hatchery wants to send me replacements = 37 chicks!?!

I want to be fair. What should I expect the hatchery to do? Refund? Partial refund?

Now I'm nervous. I'm expecting 15 Buff Orpingtons today. I hope I get what I ordered! (This is my first go at raising chickens.) Since you have 15 chicks and that's what I'm expecting, do you mind if I ask you how big your brooder is? I'm confused about exactly how big one-half a square foot is-- is it 72 square inches (half of 144 inches, the number of square inches in a square foot) or is it 36 square inches (the number of square inches in a 6-inch x 6 inch square?) I've got a brooder that's 19 x 31 inches, which is 589 square inches, giving each chick 39 square inches (right?!) Thanks for your help!

The # of chicks they send out vs the # of problems is probably a low percentage.
Good luck on your delivery!

Our brooder is a large Rubbermaid tub. Approx 2'X3.5'. This would give our 16 little yellow chicks pleanty of room. It is a little crowded with our 6 big barr rocks, also. So, the barr rocks are moving out! They are ready. Your brooder will be fine for your peeps.

sorry about the mixup, however, your post makes waiting for my brand new BR chicks coming on the 26th REALLY hard for me!!!

they are adorable!!! <3

Um... just a silly question, but how do you know your BR's are straight run and not pullets (or cockerels)?

Seriously though, you could've done much worse then BR's. They don't butcher quite as cleanly as a BO, but they are very nice birds, as are all Rocks IMO. Besides, the 2 month wait for your correct order will give you time to get these guys out of the brooder and out in the coop before your next batch arrives, still in plenty of time to be feathered out for winter laying.

I would look at it as a bonus to get so many wonderful Barred Rocks for free!

Also, I need to take issue with people being so unforgiving with the hatcheries. This is not the equivalent of ordering a book from Amazon. You are dealing with live animals that have to be hatched and delivered within a very narrow window of time. The hatcheries have to do their absolute best to have to birds they sell match what they hatch with no leftovers.

For the poster who said the OP should demand immediate replacement with the correct birds, where do you propose the hatchery find immediate replacements several days after Hatch Day? Should they keep a bunch of chicks around just to fix mixed up orders and then kill them off if they are not needed? Hatcheries are not in the business of warehousing (read: brooding) chicks, and I doubt very seriously if we could afford the prices they would need to charge if they did.

Anyway, I'm not trying to attack anyone, but you really need to understand the nature of the business, yes BUSINESS, the hatcheries are engaged in, and the dynamics of timing and human error that are involved. Waiting 2 months for a sizable order of one of the most popular breeds is not unreasonable, especially since the OP got birds that would qualify as a substitute for Buff Orps for nearly any planned use other than showing.
