UPDATE:
I loaded both dogs up with me the next morning and planned on taking them to the shelter near my family's home, about 4 hours from my home. On the way I stopped at the dairy queen to eat and let both dogs out to go potty (about 2 hours from my house). I got my food and went back out to my pickup to let the dogs out, sat on the tailgate and ate while they did their business, sat there for about 20 minutes. A few passerby-ers asked me what they were, etc....I told them I found them walking down the road, and was going to take them to the pound, felt so bad for them, I didn't know what breed they were-they weren't mine, etc.. and a lady couldn't help herself and took them

She didn't want them to go to the pound and she thought they were just "soo cute"
lol.png
SUCKER! I hope she doesn't have chickens
hmm.png
Not a word from the neighbors, I doubt they even know their dogs are gone

My nephew is now 4 days old

My hubby is back home and all birds are fine. No more wiener dogs to worry about

Just a sweet baby for me to snuggle for a few more days!!!!!!

Within the past week, the neighbors dogs have discovered we have chickens. Our "neighbors" live exactly 1.2 miles south of us, and we've both lived here for years and never had an issue. Oh---did I mention they don't speak but like 3 words of english?
hmm.png
Or at least pretend not to speak english.

It's 2 weenie dog/blue heeler male crosses
roll.png
quite interesting looking creatures, both probably weigh 35lbs each. Within the last 3 days, they've been down to our house FOUR TIMES and killed 6 chickens and one lavender baby guinea
sad.png

The first 2 times I just loaded the dogs up and took them back home (dumb dumb dumb!). I left them in their goat pen because there is no fenced yard and no one was home. Being the weenie dogs that they are, they dug out.

The third time I got the dogs and took them back home and left them in their horse trailer with a bucket of water and a "your dogs were killing my chickens please keep them at home" note on their door. Mind you it is HOT and I worried all day about the dogs in that metal trailer, even though it's a stock trailer. I also noticed they had 2 goats running around loose at their house

The man showed up at our house that evening with his grandson (who speaks english) and they apologized and offered to pay for the chickens they killed that day. I said no to the $, just asked that they kept their dogs at home, etc. Well the next dang morning the little dogs are back again at like 7am and I take them BACK to the horse trailer and left another note on their door.....that time no apology from them.

Tonight I go to the grocery store and as I'm pulling into the driveway the little weenie turds are back again trying to dig into my silkie pen!!
hmm.png
They also got one of my leghorn hens, one of my best layers!
sad.png
(our non-silkies free range).

I ran right in the house and got a pack of lunch meat and caught both dogs and put them in our big blue dog kennel/crate. Picked up my poor dead leggie hen and sat and fumed for a while. It's now nearly midnight and both dogs are in the kennel in my garage howling

.
I can't take them back to their home, obviously these people aren't interested in keeping their dogs confined and they'll just come right back and kill more birds.
If I take them to the pound tomorrow, there's a chance they'll just go pick them up--- if I can even take them there. There's no animal control out here as we're in the boonies and I'm sure the people at the pound will think I'm trying to dump my dogs off or something.

The kicker of it all is that my sister is being induced with her first baby tomorrow and I've planned on being out of town (3 hours away) for the next several days
sad.png
My DH is gone out of town working, too. I've got my MIL coming to take care of birds in the evening, but who knows what could happen during the day while she's at work. Now I've got 2 stupid dogs with even dumber owners that need to be dealt with before I can leave! GAAH!

I would drop the dogs off and the next animals shelter or pound, not the one in your town. Tell them you found them on the road on your way to the hospital to see your sister.

Even if you have to drive a county or two away, it would be worth it and you won't have to worry about your chickens while you are away.

So sorry this is all happening. I would call the police or whatever authority is in your area for these matters. Yes you can kennel the dogs till the am if it's convenient to you, but really they need to be aware that these dogs are at your place killing again. And you need to bill them for every chicken now, some people just do not learn until it costs them. Hopefully they will get a fine, have to get a dog license or something, and then pay you to boot.

I'd start with the Sheriff and see who they suggest. There may not be a dog catcher but someone is the one that has to deal with dogs, it's often the Sheriff.

I would not communicate in any way with the dog owners anymore. I'd drop the dogs off at the nearest animal control first thing in the morning. Let animal control deal with the owners.

I think the idea of dropping them off a couple of counties away sounds good. I just don't want people thinking they're MINE and I'm making up a story to get rid of them. I hate confrontation, I'll get all flustered.

I know it sounds dumb knowing what the dogs did to my sweet birds (and my baby lavender guinea OOHHH I'm still mad!!), but I feel bad taking the dogs to the pound.

I'm sure they'll be put down, they're not very attractive animals....They're not vicious or agressive dogs, just BORED dogs. Dogs who got crappy owners who let them run around the country at night where they could get ran over or eaten by a coyote. Poor things
sad.png

I was just telling my DH I needed to feed them and trying to figure out how to do it in that crowded crate they're in and he's yelling in the phone "Don't feed them! What are you trying to do?! They ate chickens, they're not hungry" Oh yeah, duh .....LOL

I'm assuming you are in an unincorporated area (since you said "the boonies"). That means you should report it to your local Sheriff's Dept. It is a crime in TX for dangerous dogs (those known to attack humans, livestock or fowl) to run loose. The Health and Safety Code States:

Sec. 822.012. CERTAIN DOGS AND COYOTES PROHIBITED FROM RUNNING AT LARGE; CRIMINAL PENALTY. (a) The owner, keeper, or person in control of a dog or coyote that the owner, keeper, or person knows is accustomed to run, worry, or kill livestock, domestic animals, or fowls may not permit the dog or coyote to run at large.

(b) A person who violates this section commits an offense. An offense under this subsection is punishable by a fine of not more than $100.

(c) Each time a dog or coyote runs at large in violation of this section constitutes a separate offense.

Section 822.013 states that:

(c) A person who discovers on the person's property a dog or coyote known or suspected of having killed livestock, domestic animals, or fowls may detain or impound the dog or coyote and return it to its owner or deliver the dog or coyote to the local animal control authority. The owner of the dog or coyote is liable for all costs incurred in the capture and care of the dog or coyote and all damage done by the dog or coyote.

Call the Sheriff's Dept and make a complaint and find out who you take the dogs to. They need to be fined and made to pay for your chickens. I would also point them to subsections (a) and (b) of 822.013 which says that you are entitled to shoot the dogs if they come onto your property again.

Good Luck and be firm. Not all Sheriff's Depts are aggressive about handling those cases but the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

And good luck to your sis on the baby!

If you take them to the pound, the owners may not understand enough to claim them and then your problems will be over. If they are smaller, interesting looking dogs, they just might get adopted if that makes you feel better about it.
Just be prepared...they will probably be over asking if you've seen the dogs. It would probably be best not to admit taking them to pound. In my county, we have to show ID, even for strays. Maybe you can have a friend (not neighbor) do it for you.
Whatever you decide....good luck.

My neighbor/SIL's dog kept coming over here trying to have it's way with my dogs, eat some chicken, and be a general pain in the ###. We complained and complained, to no avail. When my DH was at work, the dog came over again. I called the Humane Society and told them the dog wasn't from around here. They took it with them. When SIL wondered "Where's my dog?", I said "I saw the Humane Society truck driving around here today. Do you think... (horrified look on face)???" She went and got her dog back but had to PAY A FINE!!! It was large enough that she groused about it. That felt good. They chained the dog up after that. Not a good choice, but better than eating my chickens.
