So I recently purchased these 2 Wyandotte chicks. The breeder specifically told me at least one was a hen. When we got them the only real difference between them is one has a single comb and the other has the standard Rose comb. Now they are around 7 weeks and it’s pretty noticeable they have different feathering and comb and waddles have both grown. One has particularly red and large comb and waddles but the other is now developing dark red feathers on its back. Any guesses on cockerel or pullet? I’m thinking Cockerel for the single comb (he gives me death glares and likes to peck) and the rose comb has been throwing me through a bit of a loop. Nothing I’ve been finding online has been very helpful. I’ve read up on Wyandottes being hard to sex because some have no comb and waddles till late and some develop them early.

Both cockerels and the one has that 25% chance for the defective single comb. Doesn't hurt the lil guy, just not a breed trait you would want. I'd say if you care about breeding the GLW's and keeping a good line, cull the one with the single comb. If you don't care and just want to keep a roo for fun, protection, etc. keep the one that does the best job.

They're both cockerels - the way I tell them at this age is the color pattern around the base of the neck. The pullets will be a beautiful light brown/gold that is laced very tiny near the head and smoothly transitions to the large lace pattern on the body. The cockerels will have a black band around the base of the neck.

Here are some pics of my teenagers to help.

Hello, it's nice to meet you! I'd like to say welcome to BYC, the home away from home. Looks like you have yourself two handsome young Cockerels. I love the one with the single combs' face! Good luck and God bless.

Oh shoot I really only wanted 2 pullets. Guess I’ll have to find them some new homes. I might let them grow a bit first just to see what they end up looking like

Are you allowed to keep a rooster in your particular situation (area)? Because if you can, there's a very large possibility that once you find out their personalities you may keep the friendlier one for fertility stock and flock protection, depending on your wishes.
