There's a lot of talktalktalkyukyukyuk about lipstick,
but I do not recall many (or really anyone) actually doing it.

I cut a little sliver of lipstick off and stuck it in one's vent once. Her body heat must have melted it, cause for the next 2 days you could see it on the eggs and in the poo. I think food coloring might work better but I haven't tried it yet. But I'm about to. I have 3 Ameraucana hens with bright red faces that are 10 months old and ain't seen a blue egg yet from them. Haven't seen any eggs for that much. I think a drop or two of blue in the old wazoo might let me know if they are holding back till spring. And if they are laying those tinted eggs, ill at least get a couple blue eggs from them.

Although, the reason I haven't checked her vent is because 1. she's my hardest hen to catch, and 2. she's the rudest of them all(even more so than my roos...)

Isn’t that always the case! When i need to get a closer look at any of my girls they become super elusive and it takes me days to get ahold of them.

Ha. Just realized how old this thread is! That's what comes from doing an internet search... Still, curious if it was indeed from your RLBW and they do lay a darker egg than most other Wyandottes.

I do think that my darker egg was from my BLRW, since it stopped coming right around when I lost her to a weasel last spring... sadly she hadn't laid very many, so I never got any babies from her, but I plan to keep having BLRWs so maybe I can tell you for certain one day.

You may still have to catch them 'in the act' of laying to confirm who is laying which egg.

Unless you go to the dollar store and by some ghetto blue, green or orange lipstick!


Or some food coloring.

You just gotta wait it after dark, once they put themselves to bed, then you can just pick them up off the roost. That is unless they are tree chickens!

I will have to try this. We don’t have electric anywhere near it though. But i am surprised i never thought of that. Lol. Thanks!

Hmm. That seems odd. My hatch date was almost the end of april and they all started by November. Mixed breeds so it varied. Some August and some into November.

What breed are they?

Mine are at least 10 months old now and haven't seen a single egg from them. I haven't seen none of the 3 in the nest, squatting, or even practicing. Their faces and little combs are bright red and have been for 3-4 months. I reckon they are gonna wait till spring?
