I dunno but I can tell you this...my Speckles handles the higher temps better than my Lt Brahma and BAs did at 100 degrees. She was doing very little panting and actually being very active in the tractor. Everyone else was dug in, panting and such.

I have two elderly SLWs that are the lone survivors of my first foray into chickens. I had BOs, BAs and SLWs. They are the only ones left, and they are tough!!!

I've tried hard to get my chickens to like being held. The only one who really loved it was a sick SLW who was quarantined for a long time. She would ride my shoulder, and snuggle on my lap. I miss her (the illness got her). The others, I spent as much time as I could with while raising them as chicks (in my house) but even the GLW that imprinted on me as a chick hates being caught. She follows me around like a puppy though. I wish I knew the trick to making my girls appreciate a cuddle (aside from quarantine that is)

Probably if you knew that, you could make a million bucks...or at least a million friends! I've noticed that others who post their experiences mention raising their chicks all the same, yet some like to be held and some DON'T. Like you mentioned, with some, it has to be on their terms: they'll follow or gather around, but then pull back if -GASP- we should want to touch them.

Our most outgoing big chick now is a GLW and our biggest ninny is also a GLW! There are some breeds that are known to be more skitterish, as well.

I love my GLW, shes such a good girl! Loves to eat out of my hand and all. I havent picked her up but twice, im still getting her comfortable being petted regularly. Amazing how great she is, coming from a place were she was NEVER handled! But i must say......my SLW is kinda evil.......

Our SLW would curl up and die before she'd willingly be picked up! I used to try it anyway and it just wasn't worth the scratches and the bother...now I just focus on the ones who have a hint of interest in being held.

The SLW (Speckles) from two days old has wanted to be with me, on me, petted, rubbed, talked to...you name it. She would scream like something was killing her if I walked out of the room! The light brahma growls and talks talks talks.

My 6 week old GLW screams like she is being tortured if I pick her up, the Dominique is a lap chicken, the Splash Cochin is a stalking lap chicken, the Faverolles scream if I even reach for them., the 2 RIRs attack my hand just getting the waterer. They crack me up.

But Speckles...geez she rides in the van, went to school with DD last year, will sneak in the house and hide behind the couch just to stay inside. But she gives me an egg every day and bawks to tell me and show me. When I pick the egg up she struts off all proud of herself.

I have 3 GLW babies right now, they're only a week old, and not really fond of me, but I hope soon I'll be able to snuggle.

I have 3 SLW hens and one GLW roo... just picked up a BLRW hen yesterday... OMG, she's gorgeous!! (no photos yet... she's still muddy)

I have SLW and GLW and BR's. They all follow me around the yard like an entourage. They are looking for hand outs though. They are all pretty skittish of me picking them up but my 6 yr old daughter can catch and hold them without complaint from them. Its weird and I'm jealous.

Also my first pullet to lay was a slw at 18 wks

I love my wyandottes but I'm ordering EE's. I want green/blue eggs.
