Howdy,

Back in April my wife and I picked up 3 black Wyandottes chicks from Tractor Supply. One of them ended up being a rooster and when I posted a pic of him as a cockeral someone said he didn't look like a Wyandotte, if I recall correctly. Fast forward to yesterday and we got our first egg from one of the hens.... and it was white. From what I understand Wyandottes produce brown eggs so it appears we have some mislabeled chickens or the breeder made a mistake and we have a 'mutt'.

And for what it is worth they are just egg producing pets so I am fine with a mixed breed.

They do seem to have all the characteristics of Black Wyandottes. However if a person wanted to breed crossbreds with that are black with a rose combs it would be very easy. That being said its possible that the pullet when making this first egg it bypassed the stage where the egg gets its brown coating. Which would not be unheard of with newly laying pullets. I'd wait until she is laying more regularly before labeling them crossbreds for sure.

Update: The Wyandottes aren't laying. One of our young brabanters is laying in just 4 months and decided to use the other chickens coop hence the confusion.

My tractor supply silkies are huge, most with inconsistent and incorrect comb types, inconsistent crests and they lay large to huge light brown-pink eggs. They all have black skin, silkie white feathers and 5 toes. A couple have bare feet/legs. Very low quality by breed standards, but they are friendly goofy birds and great layers so they have grown on me. I won't be buying anymore birds there though. They were sold a bantams. Luckily I had an old empty coop since I bought eight and they would not fit in the intended coop once grown. I have ordered birds from a hatchery a couple of times and they had a huge selection and ended up being pretty nice birds, of course not show quality.
