YAY! We WON a horse!!!

Congrats on winning your new buddy. I remember as a kid one of the Pipe Tobacco companies used to have a contest every year for a yearling Thoroughbred and they would announce the winner in time for the Kentucky Derby.

As a kid I used to dream of owning a big farm or ranch and having a stable full of horses.

I would almost bet your mare dislikes men because she was prolly abused at a young age by men. I have a 30 year old Appaloosa mare we got dirt cheap because the university farm men tried to force load her in a trailer and she won.

My dad could never do a thing with her but I can crawl underneath her ride without a bridle, bit, halter and she will do whatever i ask her to do. My DH cannot ride her at all, she will tollerate ground work but nothing else.

My suggestion is use your new horse to pony your other one around with a saddle on it etc. get her used to your voice above her head and you touching her neck and head while riding. I always mess with mine while riding, head neck legs, flank, tail, etc

main thing is don't rush it. look into Parelli training, it is basics of trust and play and enjoying each other. Basic common sense things we forget...thinking like a horse would think.

Congratulations and good luck with your mare too!

Thanks everyone! We go get him this weekend and are SO excited!

As far as the mare, the guy training her was trained by Dennis Reis using Natural Horsemanship methods. She wasn't a willing student, though. I am going to have to work on getting her back where she was before I can do too much with her. She has started kicking. She threatened me the other day, but backed off when I told her, "No!" so I still think there's hope. It's just going to take a while.

I'm afraid if I pony her, she'll go after the horse I'm riding. I could try it with her buddy, though. He's pretty laid back. It's just going to take a lot of work and I feel like I am farther away from my goal than when I started.

I have some of Parelli's books. I really enjoy them. Those are what I got when I started looking at horses.

Thanks for the support!

Shelly if you have the Parelli books start from lesson #1.......get her trust back to YOU!!!

Play predator and prey game and the other games in their series, and make her WANT to be with you. TRUST TRUST TRUST is the key. My guess without pointing fingers is that if she is kicking, she was not trusted where you took her to have her training, hope you did not pay much for it. I would say they pushed her beyond what she was ready for. You have to untrain the bad habits. Honestly using parelli will get her to trust you and accept you as one of the herd. THEN she will WANT to work for you and will not leave you alone in the pasture.

Good luck and yes it might be better ponying with her buddy first.

I will keep my prayers going that everything works out.

My little mare is happy to be home. She is starting to come around, and calls me loudly as soon as she sees me every day. She just wants me to be touching her all the time. She hasn't threatened to kick since about the second day. However, she has decided that she does not like Hoss (the new gelding) competing for my attention, and poor Hoss just lets her beat the snot out of him.

He is just too nice! I feel bad for him, and I have to stand between them when feeding, or she will just look at him and he takes off, poor guy!
