The hole at the back of the tongue is the trachea - Nothing should ever go in there!

While you're out, get 16" of aquarium air line, Kaytee Baby Bird Food and a 60 ml syringe, and I'll teach you how to tube feed her, You'll find the air line and Kaytee at the Petsmart or Petco and the syringe at tractor supply.

Kathy I have two chickens that have died with lethargy and hiding in the coop and one of them had runny yellow poop! Wasn't able to find poop on the other one. I bathed them in Epsom salt and one had a swollen bum and the other was still pooping yellow and they were both eating some of the time. Now they are dead. I started my whole flock on electrolytes and vitamins . Don't know if they died from peritonitis? Need help! They at North 40 said I couldn't use eggs if I Medicate or worm is that true?

Hi Kath
Quote: The Safeguard or Panacur dose to treat a chicken for cecal worms is 0.23 ml per pound once and repeat in ten days. the Safeguard dose to treat capillary worms is also 0.23 ml per pound, but for *five* consecutive days. Medications given orally should be given based on the birds weight. Does that make sense?

Quote: This was a *huge* dose, more than I have ever read about a vet prescribing, but it's possible that the vet was treating for something other than worms, like maybe giardia. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it wasn't needed, just that I haven't read about people giving that much, though there are some references in vet books about giving it that way.

Hard to say what they dies from as the symptoms fit so many diseases. You can eat their eggs after medicating... Most people wait two weeks.

Well I missed that before I left. Tube feeding sounds scary. I'm hoping I won't have to?

QUESTION: This med includes praziquantel which is effective on tape worms -- maybe others? Will it treat the cecal worms that carry blackhead? Would using this and Safeguard at the same time be double dosing her?

Sorry to hear about your chickie. I had the same problem and it was worms. I got some Ivermectin from the vet which cleared it up.

@casportpony Thank you so much for your help!
I was able to give her the metronidazole and while we were at it I kept giving her yogurt. So she got about a half teaspoon of that probably. If it sits in her mouth for a few seconds she swallows. I watched the vidoes on tube feeding that are in your signature. It looks straightforward but how do you know the tube is going down the throat and not the wind pipe? And how far do you push it in? And how much food do you use?

Is there any other food, such as coddled egg or chicken feed mashed in water, that I could spoon feed her like I did the yogurt. Or is this just folly? She seems to be getting weaker as the day continues.
