I have an egg that started hatching yesterday, right at the top part of the egg. It has broken about 1/4th the way around the egg, but now there is yellowish liquid that spilled from the egg. The paper towel soaked up the liquid, so there is not a puddle, but is this normal?
My guess is that it is yolk, but I am not sure. Ive head a peep in there since ive been home, but it could have been from another egg that just started hatching.
Also, today will be day 24.

This is not normal and could indicate a ruptured yolk sack. Is the chick still zipping the shell? If so he should be alright as long as there is no bleeding. Once zipping begins in earnest it should take no more than a couple of hours.

I carefully took the egg out, and the liquid was hardened and there was absolutly no movement within the egg. Is there any way to soften the hard liquid, or is the chick gone?
Maybe...maybe not.
Sometimes they need a bit of a rest.
18 hours later, how did it turn out?

Nothing for the egg with the yellow around it. I did have another egg hatch and the chick seems healthy, but not fully dry yet, and it was stumbling over the yolky egg, and the yolky egg chick did not move at all.

And with my alive chick, I have to go somewhere again tomorrow, so if a chick is fully dry will harm come to it if it is in the incubator for a few extra hours? Whens the limit?

They can stay in there for a day, maybe two..it needs to eat and drink by then tho.
I usually remove chicks to brooder in groups of at least two so they are not alone.

Can you see beak of 'yellow' egg chick...is it moving?
If chick is dead best to remove that egg form bator.
Any other eggs pipped?

I had only three eggs make it to this point. The "yellow" egg chick is dead, my guess is the yolk was not fully absorbed into it, and the yolk dried. A different egg did pip, and hatched so I took the chick that hatched out, and it is in the brooder with a stuffed animal chick and some other stuffed animal that I figured it could cuddle under. The third egg died before it could hatch. Im gonna try to "make" one of my hens go broody, so the lone chick can grow up and know its a chicken.
I also put a word out to family friends that I am looking for more chicks so it wont be lonely.

Oh I'm sorry it didn't turn out well. :( I don't think you will have much success with the hen but I hope you can find another chick or a few for it soon.
