Yet again...HORROR in the hen house. :(( **FINAL UPDATE!!!**

THANK YOU so much everyone for your kind thoughts/words.

I apologize for the crudity of my previous post...I too, was in shock.

Yes, we called the police. I don't know if they did an official "report"...no papers were ever broken out.

I will call animal control first thing tomorrow (my cousin runs it) to address my concerns about the aggressive behavior, in case the police don't report to them about every incident on the weekends.

The bad thing is, I live in the city...and most "superiors", meaning law enforcers, don't recognize the importance of chickens to their owners.

Be it pets like ours are, or food like others are for some people, they ARE important animals.

What I am so upset about is that twice now, 2 seperate attacks have happened IN MY YARD...and today, they were even COOPED and the dogs jumped on top of the outer run to bust in.

I am within the law of my pet ownership, and my chickens are cooped and well taken care of...yet, this one officer was all "chickens aren't allowed in the city limits you know"...so I told him of the actual city code which DOES permit poultry in the city limits.

What an idiot.

Be it legal or not, what if my kids or my schnauzer would've been in the back yard? Not just my chickens?

The people were bawling and offering to replace my chickens, but Moma Hattie simply is not replaceable.

Here is a picture of my beauty with my daughter...she was one of the most tame in my flock (and if any of you saw my video on Yahoo! Videos...she was the light brahma standing in my lap enjoying bread).

As for Feather...she is eating and drinking (electrolyte water, and heartily), but not wanting to move, and rightfully so. I am going to make some aspirin water tonight to start administering tomorrow morning.

Also, I made a mash of whole grain wheat bread, boiled egg, and a crushed up children's chewable vitamin, and she attacked it like there was no tomorrow.

She's not standing, but I'm sure it's because of the wound between her legs...but I'm not going to address that tonight because I don't want to bother the horrible skin on her back...I want to give it some time to fuse before I attempt to look under her.

Anyway...there's more information for you all, and THANK YOU...

I am so sorry for you loss

Very said..I do often want to give animals the benifit of the doubt but this sounds like it was pretty dangerious. They did break into your coop and then attack and then not back down.

One other thing I forgot to add...

The dog Brutus wasn't the only one. He was just the one still in the yard being aggressive after the attacks.

The other dog, another PB mix, was with him, and he was the one who started the attacks, according to my neighbor.

Brutus jumped into the yard and then wouldn't let my neighbor in my yard to help the hens. He would lunge and growl at her.

When hubby got in the back yard, he got a huge stick from ice storm debris and the other dog fled the yard, and jumped the fence, barking and lunging at hubby through the fence while Brutus remained in the yard, advancing every time hubby would lower the stick.

Thank God I knew the dog's name, because he seemed to "chill" when he heard me say "BRUTUS, NO!!!!!!" and swing my Bo-Staff I grabbed out of my closet on the way out around.

The people have told Linda that the other one stays on a chain because he is a bit aggressive and WILL jump the fence. Brutus never has, but I bet he will now that he's had so much fun in our yard.

Now, IMO, if they don't get rid of them, they both need to be penned or chained...and chained well.

I can't live on eggshells because of the other people's dachsunds who killed Billy and Marti and now these people's dogs, too. Both are only a house away.

God I'm a nervous wreck.

I may be a Pit lover but any dog that tries to back a person down needs to go. Shooting the irresponsible owners probably would be a community service also.

As much as I am not a fan of more regulations I am starting to think it is time we license animal owners rather than hand out dog licenses. They screw up and lose the privilage of owning pets.

Officer, I don't know what happened, the dog must have ran right into the bullit.

Today it's chickens tomarrow its the kids.
I'll take a ride down town over a trip to the morgue for my kids anyday...

How sad indeed. Hopefully you can do something to deter this in the future..it's an awful tragedy and like seagullplayer said..tomorrow it will be the kids once the chickens have been cleaned up.

My youngest son was attacked by a "friendly family dog that never hurt anyone before" when he was three. It took three adults to get the dog off him, he was rushed to the hospital and came away with only a few stitches in the top of his head.

Had those three adults including his mother not been right there in the yard with him when it happened, I would not have a 17 year old today.

Take NO chances. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want a dog capable of killing someone and calling it a "pet" anyway.

I don't want to scare you, I just want you to understand this is not just a problem with your chickens...

I am so sorry and I feel your loss. It's something that someone outside of this group doesn't understand. Have you approached the owners of the dogs? I knocked on the guys door immediately after I found out who the dogs belongs to. When he didn't answer I found out his number and called him. He called me back and was very nice.

I am truly sorry my heart goes out to you.
