Yet another prolapse

Glad she is doing better, and hope her recovery is complete!
Regarding the use of HONEY: Honey has Clostridium botulinum spores in it. (Think botulism) Pasteurization doesn't kill spores, either--they are extremely resistant, and pasteurization is low temp. The reason babies cannot have honey and older children and adults can, is that babies don't have the ph in their stomachs to keep those spores from developing inside the body (they are anaerobic, meaning they grow in the absence of oxygen, which is why you hear botulism in connection with canned foods.) When the spores develop, the bacteria produces the toxin. (Pasteurization does denature the toxin, not the spores.) Honey can be very useful for wounds that are open AND EXPOSED TO AIR, but I wouldn't use it where there is low oxygen, just in case. Sugar does not have Clostridium botulinum spores in it.

So a final update to Ms Pickle.

FULL FREAKING RECOVERY

After the last update with the bath, we had minimal issues. After a couple of days and her prolapse was gone, I put her back outside with everyone. Her bearded sister Frankie was probably the most excited to see her. She did prolapse again 2 days later. I noticed she was constipated Ans had packed poo in her bum. So after a bath, I picked the poo out with astroglide and a q tip and put her back on probiotic water. (Won’t be able to unsee those moments in my life!) The constipation was less and less until there have been no problems since!! I still hold my breath though every time I go out there, not gonna lie!

She is back on her egg schedule, back to the top of the pecking order, and there’s a special gushy feeling I get every time I see her and her sister hanging out because of how many times I didn’t think she was going to make it.

The key thing I learned was to be patient. The two baths a day helped as well as the vetericyn & ointment. I am also fortunate enough to have the extra funds to take my girls to the vet which I know not everyone can do. I couldn’t say if she would’ve made a recovery without the medicine, but the medicine absolutely made a difference on getting the inflammation to go down which made it so Pickle could heal.

Violet was soaking this morning, after me having a good cry over her. After her soak, I started working at the hard scabby thing again. I got some of it off around the edges. Suddenly she pooped, and everything went back inside her by itself! She is still really swollen, so I irrigated her with sugar water, and lubed her up with coconut oil. She’s now resting in her dark area after having some scrambled egg yolk with fresh garlic and oregano and crushed egg shells. I’m pretty sure not all of the scabby thing came off, but do you think it will come off inside of her and just poop out?

I’m afraid to get too excited over this, but I feel maybe we made some progress.

Violets vent looks normal today! I’m going to keep her in darkness most of the day today and again tomorrow to try to prevent her from laying for a bit longer. I’m so thankful to you for sharing Pickle’s experience as it really helped me navigate this. I hope our stories can also help others.
