Wow, I am surprised. We live on a dirt road here in GA. Actually there are several dirt roads in our area. All of them have kids with 4-wheelers and golf carts. Down the main highway our dirt roads are connected to there is a 4-wheeler track "road" down the side all the way to the store and down the other side all the way to the lake. The only place they have stopped the kids from riding them is on the WMA property around the lake (though they still do it). Never heard of a kid out here getting a ticket or a warning for that matter(except on the WMA property and those were only warnings).

Not so. If that expressway runs through his city, he can absolutely issue a summons.

Thanks for this; that's what I thought.

I also live where 4 wheelers and golf carts are very common on my dirt road. We see a police car maybe once every 6 months. Never heard of anyone getting ticketed for this.

Maybe someone complained about under aged, unlicensed, unhelmeted, unsupervised kids riding around on an atv where the school bus route is. Or maybe the cop just cared that the kids don't get hurt.

I see both sides of it here, but there are a few loophole sin his(sheriffs) story...

First off, My daughter has a quad, its a smallish John Deer looking thing, and it has a HUGE sticker on it that says "no rider's under 12 years of age"....Now, my daughter is 10 and I let her ride, but she HAS to wear a helmet. That was the deal when my brother bought it for her, He had to buy her a full face helmet to go with it. He didn't get the helmet in time for Christmas and she rode it Christmas day around the neighborhood (we live in the city) with the guys...well she rounded a corner and slid and slammed right into a retaining wall and busted her face up pretty good. She was brave about it, but she had a broken nose and two black eyes cos she WAS NOT wearing a helmet.

BIG MISTAKE on my part! I didn't think she would get hurt just riding around the neighborhood with the guys with her. The next day I sent my brother to get her helmet and she always wears it!

Anyway, on to the sherriff and his statements.

It states on my daughters quad that anyone over the age of 12 can ride it...last time I checked, you cannot get a drivers license unless you are at least 16 (in most states), so that throws that out that you could be ticketed for not being licensed while riding a quad.

I've never heard of insuring an ATV...like a car and such....so don't know about that, but it seems like he was going a bit overboard there.

I've rambled so much I forgot the other citations he stated....lol

All in all, if he actually was trying to express a point about the kids safety, he should have just done so, not threatened a myriad of citations. I've had the police stop my daughter and I come out and they never threaten a citation. Just tell me she can't ride on the city streets and for her to put it away..this has happened on numerous occasions, LOL.

Here's her on her quad:

Gotta love the mohawk, can't miss her coming, LOL!

No. They werent riding around anywhere near the school bus route. DD drives down the country lane. Parks 50 feet back from the road in a neighbors unused lot. Waits for DS, and they come back up the lane.

They werent speeding or horsing around. That isnt what the machine is for. It is a vehicle, not a toy and they know this. Even the officer said that obviously they had respect for the vehicle and he assured me that they were not being 'wild'.

There were no complaints. DD delivers eggs to them on the vehicle on Saturdays.

my dad and gram live 3 miles from me. my son used to travel farm fields and woods to get back and forth on atv, there was only maybe a couple hundred yards of roads used and he got warned for it. they couldnt do anything about the fields because he had permission. I think even thought your lane has a name that if its not a township or county road they cant do anything. But Im not in your area, I would definitely check on that. Around here is rural, and yes my son started driving pick up truck at 13 after starting on the riding mower at 5 and the police knew he was driving the truck from farm to farm, on the highway, they just never caught him. I guess it all depends on if you have a cop who wants to make an issue of it.

If an individual isn't old enough to possess a valid license, and is operating a vehicle, that individual is unlicensed. Someone without a license can be issued a summons for that violation.

Any vehicle operated on a road must be registered and insured. This includes ATVs. If it's operated on private property, it does not need to be registered or insured, but once it hits the road, you run the risk of being issued the appropriate summonses and having the vehicle impounded.

I'll admit that I'm not clear on what you said about the road your daughter was riding on, but I just wanted to clarify your statements.
