YO GEORGIANS! :)

Awesome!! My daughter Is getting married in Sept. and moving out of the country so I will be caring for her ducks. Do ducks need a water supply like a pond?? OMG I'm not ready for a pond yet.......

Ok I have one more newbie question before they get here. Alot of people lock thier birds up at night and release them in the morning. Why?

Predators.

And no, ducks don't require a pond per se, but some form of water such as a kiddie pool is great for them. They use water to eat, drink, bathe, etc. they need to be able to dunk their head underwater. Just remember, if they are ducklings they CAN drown so wait until they are old enough to have free access to any deep water. :)

Some insight into the water need (again, not a pond, but even a good-size bucket will do):

Ducks do not actually have the ability to swallow like other animals. And they don't have saliva either. Ducks actually NEED to "wash down" their food with water each time they eat. This is why they need to have plenty of water, and always available. Even if they are just foraging on grass, there needs to be water available. They don't really even need it to bathe, but a source of water to use alongside eating is just THAT important.

Oh, and most birds (except owls) have VERY poor night vision. That's why it's easiest to catch a wild chicken when they are roosting. And that's why people lock them up at night.

Oooh, got any of older ones of those you want to part with? Lol!

I just got, during the ice storm and no heat, a hahns macaw. Poor baby was totally plucked. I'm working with her now. She is doing so well right now and a very sweet girl. Yes as soon as she is done with her meds. She had no perches so she is just now starting to perch at night instead of clinging to the wall of her cage. She will make someone a very precious girl.:D

Gotta hit up TSC today (please don't have birds, please don't have birds, please don't have birds)...

But I have to take my niece with me, and she's already been saying she wants another "Quackers" (which is what they called their old mallard duck). I'm hoping I can come back without birds - ESPECIALLY considering my sister took her trash to the dump yesterday and picked up a chicken coop someone discarded. I've GOT to resist the temptation to fill it!
