Just a reminder to all the GA folks to be CAREFUL where you get your birds. A while back, I bought some pullets and a roo that looked fine... until I got them home. Within days, they had swollen eyes and were dropping like flies. I had exposed my flock to MG... and had to cull everyone.
After eliminating and cleaning... and waiting... I found someone nearby who seemed very careful. I bought 5 chicks that *seemed* healthy. One died overnight. One died two days later. One developed a swollen eye. Everyone had to be culled.
MG, and other respiratory diseases, are rampant. Birds who have been exposed can seem perfectly healthy, but be carriers FOR LIFE. People, knowingly or unknowingly, are selling birds from diseased flocks... spreading these illnesses like wildfire.
Closed flocks are only CLOSED if there is NO transfer of animals... even for studding!!! I cannot wait to get a healthy, disease free flock, and stay CLOSED.
*sigh*
Be careful out there!
