YO GEORGIANS! :)

Question: how long after hatching chicks does a hen begin to lay again, normally? And if you let her hatch chicks but take them away, does she go right back broody?

I know it sounds odd, but here's why.. IF my girl really is broody, I would love to let her hatch, but without giving her some from my bator I have none for her. But the reason I would take them away after hatching is because I have nowhere right now that is appropriate IMO for her to raise them. The enclosure my adult brahmas are in has large gaps in the wire big enough for babies to fit through..

Also I would like for her to start laying again so I can collect for a July set but her not laying leaves me with only one other Brahma laying.

Any thoughts/experience?

If she hatches them and you take the babies away, it will still take a couple of weeks for her to lay again. But she won't try to sit anymore.

This little guy... I tell you what. He thought my sister's cat was a threat. The cat is old. At least 12 years old, but no one really knows. He showed up already full-grown on my sister's door step 12 years ago. And he's fat and lazy. He's not about to go after this poult anymore. He's like garfield - that requires too much energy when there's a bowl of perfectly good food right around the corner. But the turkey didn't get that. So despite being only THREE WEEKS OLD, this little jake decided he was going to strut anyway, and protect his girl!

There's no doubt it's a male, now. Yeah, females might strut, but I doubt they'd do it this young! (Plus the one I think is female just stayed cowered down and hidden anyway).

First, a pic of him in "normal" mode. While he's not strutting here, you can see his neck is starting to get a little thin in the down coverage.

Now the strutting photos. Please forgive me for the blurry ones. He didn't want to stand still, so I kept having to "chase" him with the camera. But I think I got enough for you all to see what he's doing!
