Random newbie question... the lady I bought my chickens from is hopefully going to let me trade in my roosters for hens now that they are about 8 weeks. If i add her 2 hens to my flock, do I quarantine the 2 hens together and for how long? I have heard 2 weeks- 1 month. Thoughts?
My next question is how/what do you quarantine them in?
I have an extra dog crate, it's pretty big, is that an option for 2 birds?
I just found a video of someone showing how they pack and ship their fertile eggs with a good success rate. If you have time could you or someone else check it out and see what you think? If you can't find them (she posts a lot), pm her. She's super nice and had helped me a lot!
Thank you, also.. How far from my current flock should I quarantine the other birds? I'm trying to think where I can put a dog crate that would keep them safe outside the existing run.
I just read this on The Chicken Chick. She has to keep them at least 12 yards away from existing flock.Thank you, also.. How far from my current flock should I quarantine the other birds? I'm trying to think where I can put a dog crate that would keep them safe outside the existing run.
That should be fine, just make sure you use shredded newspaper or packing peanuts as filler to keep them from slamming into the sides of the box ore each other.I just found a video of someone showing how they pack and ship their fertile eggs with a good success rate. Yeah, using the scrunched up paper was the only thing I wasn't crazy about. What about the eggs being in the ziploc, I mean don't they need air? That should be fine, just make sure you use shredded newspaper or packing peanuts as filler to keep them from slamming into the sides of the box ore each other.
