Does anyone on here breed sexed EEs, Buff Orpingtons and Leghorns (not White) around the Augusta area?

( You can PM me if you do)

We got our second egg, unfortunately the shell was extremely thin and the hen laid it in the poop tray under the roost. I'm wondering if this egg was laid during the night from the roost because it had finally cooled down outside and maybe the hen didn't realize what was going on because the shell was so thin. Just seems weird that the very first one laid was in the nest and this one that is so thin shelled wasn't anywhere near the nest. Got to get layer feed now and put some oyster shell in the food area. What is some of y'all's favorite brand of layer feed and where do you purchase it from?

It is common for new layers to have an issue with eggs. You may even get some double yokers at the beginning, too! Their bodies will adjust. Just think about the things you went thru during puberty! Lol! I use Layena because it is one of the few I found that has vit E in it. I think that is important. And, I do offer Oyster Shell in a separate feeder. Don't worry, your hen will start laying normally and the eggs will get larger as she matures.

Mine started laying about 2 weeks ago, and every once in a while, I get a soft shelled egg. I think part of it is that they are young layers. Most of them have a nice hard shell. I haven't noticed it is with one particular bird, but I don't think it is unusual to get one from young girls. Definitely put out oyster shell for them though!

For layer feed, I get the store brand from TSC in pellet form.

Hey all! My girls are 17 1/2 weeks old. They will be 18 weeks on Sunday. I assume they should start laying soon. Do I need to do anything special other than give them some nesting boxes with some straw or shavings? Do chickens lay anytime of the day or is it mostly first thing in the morning?

We also recently built a chicken tunnel giving them access to the backyard, so they have TONS of space now and seem much happier. We still haven't finished our big coop though. There have been so many other little projects that we have had to deal with. Comes with the territory of buying a new house. haha Hopefully soon. For now they are in a smaller coop.

You may want to consider putting something in the nesting box that resembles an egg so they get the idea to lay in there. I put golf balls in my nests. MOST of my eggs are in the nests, but I still find a few around the coop.

Anyone else's chicks do this? Seems like any time I have babies in this long brooder, they stay wayyy down at the far end from the light. Granted, underneath the light is a bit warm, but I have a thermometer at both ends and where they are is only 85*. I don't really worry for them, just think it's strange. They still do normal chickie baby stuff like eat, drink and play and sleep..

With all the babies going to the other end, I would move the heat lamp higher and think the thermometer is broken.
