YO GEORGIANS! :)

Well the "what gender is this" thread received a good amount of feedback on my birds sex, consensus says both are roos. They are going back on Saturday. Bye bye boys.

Well I know who my layer is and it is exactly who I thought. :)

No egg this morning but I went out about 2:30 and there was a chicken in a nest. I tried a million times to upload the pic but it won't work... Maybe later. Anyways it's my white rock.

QUESTION: when you see a chicken in a nest do you quietly walk away and leave them alone? Can you touch/talk to them? I know that sounds weird, but when I opened the door, she looked at me and made a purring sound. Maybe it was a growl.. I don't know.

The bird on the bottom is suppose to be an ameracuana, says the breeder, but you are not the first to say it looks like an EE. I really don't want to give it back if it's a hen.[/quote

It is an EE. It is not a "recognized" (accepted) color in the Ameraucana standards book. Even chicks from two different colors of purebred Ameraucana chickens would become EE as they are now of mixed color and would no longer 'breed true". But, EE are my favorite so keep her!

Your top one is probably a boy. Separate the feathers at its back and look for new iridescent pointy feathers. That would be boy.

I think your EE is female. Most EE males will have color on its shoulders/wing area by now. My girl....

Also look for pointy iridescent saddle and hackle feathers on both. Those are boys if they have pointy feathers,

What age do they usually start laying?

I talk and pet my chickens while they are in the nest box. I tell them what good girls they are! I think it helps them get use to you. As a result, we can look under them when they are broody and sitting eggs with no problem. They also trust us with newly hatched chicks. I do, however, have one chicken who doesn't like it. She will growl every time. We respect her wishes.

please excuse my lack of knowledge. Are EE similar to ameracuanas? Is that what I have? I really don't know.

Very similar. True Americanas and Araucanas are rare. Most are called those, but are really Easter Eggers. I'm fairly certain yours is an EE. I wouldn't take the EE back yet. I'd venture to say that's a hen. The RIR definitely looks like a roo though.

thanks. I will just take back the rir for now. I examined feathers, I really don't know what I'm doing. I didn't think the EE had pointy feathers, definitely no sheen or iridescent coloring at all.

It's like I said before, an Ameraucana only has five "accepted" colors. If you go to the Ameraucana club websites, they will walk you thru the difference of an EE and an Ameraucana. When I was new to chickens I got two 'Ameraucanas' and read a lot about them and realized they were really EE.. You could have a real white Ameraucana and a real black one, but if you breed them together, they are no longer 'pure' . Those chicks would not breed true. In other words, a white looking chick from them could give birth to a Chick of a different color because of hidden genetics as a result of the mixed color breeding.. BTW, EEers are not a breed. they are mixes. A 'breed' will always breed true....in other words, ALL the chicks will look just like their parents. Same color and look. An EE or mixed chicken will have chicks that May or may not look like them. There may be different colors or have beards or not have beards, etc. so, you could have a chick that has two true Ameraucana parents, but still be an EE. In my opinion, an EE is hardier and lays way more eggs than a true Ameraucana! You won't be disappointed in keeping her!
