Will it happen naturally and noticeably as they get older or do I need to start leaving the eggs for a few days to allow them to build up a few?
How old are your Silkie hens? You could try leaving a couple of eggs in the nest box over night. It may trigger their broody instinct.

My oldest started laying around the time she was 21 weeks old and at 25 weeks she went broody. At that time I didn't want extra chicks so I kept removing the eggs. Just before Christmas I had the second oldest Silkie hen go broody along with a BO. I watched them for a few days but removed the eggs. When I figured out that they were not going to give up I divided 13 eggs and put under them. They shared a large nest and hatched 10 chicks out of the 13 eggs. After the chicks were a couple of days old I put the moms and chicks in the broody area of our coop. The hens raised the chicks until they where about 5 weeks old. At that time I found two eggs laying on the ground in the chick area. I knew it was then time for the hens to be with the other chickens. The BO was ready to give up but the Silkie still wanted to raise the chicks. I had to take them from her and place them in the brooder because she was just too small to keep all of them warm by herself. Poor thing cried for a couple of weeks (or it sounded like it) when she would see the area that she raised the chicks.

My Silkie is around 17 weeks give or take. The showgirl is around 21 weeks and the smooth showgirl is around 22 weeks.

I need a new blue egg layer (as in, already laying).. Anyone have one they'd be willing to part with? I'm down to just one as my other was getting beat up so badly I had to give her away. :( She was my favorite too.. The bearded one.

Maybe the Silkie in the Showgirls will kick in and you will have a broody or two for Spring!

The Silkie may take until late Spring. Keep us informed. I would love to see what happens with them.

Ok so the silkie is 21 weeks. The smooth showgirl is 23 weeks. The standard showgirl is 22 weeks. The black turken is 23 weeks and she has laid 14 eggs. The brahma is 20 weeks and has laid 1 egg. I just need one of them to go broody once i have some eggs stored up. I could end up with sizzles, showgirls, turkens, mille fleur coloring, silkies and everything in between.

My girls are not happy that their run still has so much snow!

That's the top of their coop. Run is all that snowy hill behind it! Just took this photo!
