YO GEORGIANS! :)

well today, I got 4 brown eggs. I took the time to go sit in the run and try to get some pics and close ups of the 3 'leghorns'...........

1 of them I have no doubt is a leghorn, this is the first girl to give me an egg, and it was white. No doubt, with the white earlobes. She's also the smallest of all the hens I have, as far as body size

the other two, even though I was told at TSC they were leghorns, obviously have something else up the family tree. note the red earlobes, which most likely explain why I'm getting brown eggs from them. Very disappointed in the chickens I bought at the Rome TSC. out of the six pullets I bought, supposed to be 3 leghorns and 3 black australorps, 1 australorp turned out to be a boy, and 2 of the leghorns are some mix that's giving me brown eggs instead of white.....this may have just sealed the deal for me ever buying any from TSC again....

Did you happen to notice the difference in body shapes of your 'Leghorns'? A true leghorn is an 'egg' bird and will have a slim body. They are designed for laying lots of eggs, not for eating. Notice bird in pic #2. Very full bodied. Almost like an orpington. She , looks like a dual purpose chicken. And, remember, this year TS got their chicks from a different hatchery and they were not marked as being certain breeds, They really had no way to know what they got. They were just shipped 'pullets' or 'straight run' on a lot of their chicks. I know the people who run the TS in Ellijay and Dawsonville hated it! They could only guess at most of them. I, expert that I am (LOL) couldn't even tell what half of them were! Maybe next spring, they will go back to the old hatchery and you will get better results.

yeah, there wasn't that much difference in their bodies though until they got up around 12 or 13 weeks old. I've had leghorns before, and they were different sizes, but not THIS much difference in their size. These are putting out the small brown eggs, I mean small small. Not sure how long I'll keep these two, not if these eggs don't get bigger soon

On another note, I'm sorry, but in my opinion, if they don't get the breed from the hatchery, then they shouldn't even try to label them. Already mentioned so many times across this site that for the most part, the people who work there don't know much about chickens. Bunch of yellow fuzzy butts running around could turn out to be about anything that isn't a CLEAR case of 'we can tell because of the coloring'

I'm in a discussion on facebook with a FB friend over my 2 white chickens that are laying brown eggs.....I'll just go ahead and say she's not the first person who either didn't read my whole post, or has some reading comprehension issues and didn't understand my post. So in this discussion, I mentioned crossing my ameraucana rooster with the brown egg laying hens and should get olive eggers as a result.

Her response was 'LMAO at olive eggers vs easter eggers'.........she also told me if I'd wash the ameraucana eggs with soap and water within a couple of hours of being laid, I could wash the blue off of them.........anyone ever heard that? I have my doubts because they're blue inside too, or at least the last ones I had laid eggs that were blue inside and outside.......

Oh, and she worked in a commercial egg production facility when she was in high school (and she's been out of high school for a LONG time). She tried to tell me my white eggs aren't white, they're cream colored. If I'd compare them to store bought eggs that are white white, because they bleach them.......I actually did put my first few eggs from my leghorn in the carton with the store bought eggs I had left and there was literally no difference..........

anyway, I don't know why I let people get to me like this, LOL I don't have much patience for someone who comes off as a know it all with a response, when their response shows they obviously didn't even read the whole comment or didn't understand it if they did........

One of my AM is in the coop singing like CRAZY.. And I can hear her scratching shavings around!! The other pullets are lined up on the ramp singing too.

I'm DYING for her to come out so I can see if it really can be!!

Thanks for the information and input. Here is pictures of my latest addition. Was able to get three hens, these and a LIR from a lady not far from me. Both these ladies have given me three eggs in the three days I have had them. Still waiting on my large flock for eggs. Not sure of the exact breed, the lady that I got them from said they were bantam.

Just a facebook friend, never met her in person. I think she goes back to my farmtown days. I came close to just deleting her first response without even responding, but hey, I can't help it, I ain't wired that way,

even yesterday for her second egg, all the others had laid before lunch. I didn't check again until after Jill got home from work and it was there. No white egg yesterday, I found it, broken soft shell in the poop tray. At least she put it where it would be easy to clean up, I need to find a treat for her for that,

I didn't realize the oyster shell feeder was out, so they got more oyster shell yesterday, maybe the white eggs will be back today. Yesterday was my first 5 egg day, I'm going to give a couple dozen to some of the neighbors and let the sizes get a little better before I start selling. Was looking at the murray mcmurray site yesterday at those clear plastic egg cartons. I may do an order on some of those, let me know if you're interested in any the price gets a little better per case when your order increases
