YO GEORGIANS! :)

we aren't sure of the age of our young one (the one that started it all! A freebie for our kids) We were told she would start laying eggs in the spring. She used to be super friendly now is skidish and if you do get her she goes nuts till you let her down. Pretty quiet all together. Someone told my hubs that if a rooster is around hens all the time they won't crow much, so that maybe something??

I am actually incubating some soon, and am going to put eggs from the 2 in question with them so after a few days I will know for sure. The next thing will be to find the rooster!

and that is a good sized egg for a silkie!!!!! Have a happy, blessed day!

Yes, JoTaylor, that parthogenesis stuff is quite heady. Apparently as the literature says it does occur in hatchery white leghorns as well barred rockers and some other breeds. What it means as I understand it, is that it will show a "fertility spot" and embryonic development BUT it will not continue upon incubation......

So if these are indeed parthogenetic birds the eggs will not develop all the way out. If one or both develops all the way there is a roo amongst you. My hubby just cracked up when i told him what I learned..... He shook his head and said Only I would search and search for something like that..... I am not poultry obsessed, I am not, LOL, I am a land called Denial......Ha....Keep us posted on those birds..... I found it fascinating that this was recent research as it really does cut in the earnings for big commercial hatcheries! I never thought about that because I never knew about this....... Have a great one and good luck on the hatching.

I'm sorry to here about broke beak!

Hello all.. from over here in Carroll County - hi Floyd folks not far away. Well, good to be doing a little farming! Mostly bunny tending and a little on the chickens. Yahoo. I figured it will take about 2 months to recover from that time in hospital.... But I'm slowly working....Ooh eggciting egg news. Fingers crossed and prayers said, our first Sebastapol eggs are in the incubator....Hoping Hopin Hoping.... It would seem that I have one gander and two gals....We will know soon..... I know I have two gals (so says hubby) cause 2 eggs every 2 days like clock work....So Mr. Sebbie is being tested!!!!! If not, I know a roadie trip is in order. Here's a pic of the three. They are young born in 2012. So different from our white chinese geese who are soooo loud......Sebbies are quiet...... This pic was still there growing up stage....Guinea fever has set in for hubby.. Hubby is resisting the urge to incubate every guinea egg...They have been laying since March1.....Crazy early for them.. I think I saw a tear in his eyes this morning when I cooked some guinea eggs...... This weekend, hopefully the lavendar guinea pen will be set up....... They kept escaping the last one.....All the other guineas run loose and for the fun I'll let a few lavendar guinea boys run with them too....Love the various colors we get.. I will let hubby do a big guinea incubation, but priority is those goose eggs. Last year I think he hatched about 1000 of them, no lol, b ut it sounded like it as their brooders were on the front porch by our bed room windows. Yowsers!!!!!!!!!! ha!

Yolk Alert Coming up.....BIG HAHAHA of the day.....Okay I know it's bad when you have to announce you should laugh here....
ya.gif
But here goes.............How many broody silkies does it take to sit on a goose egg....visualize about 5 inches or so long and maybe 10 ounces may a little less...........Seriously do you think two silkies would cover a goose egg???? I have two very determined ones right now........ Our silkies have hatched out lf eggs, even a few guineas for me last year, but I think I better say no..... Now where is a LF broody when you need one..... I'm going looking today!!!!!! Jac has snow peas coming up and also planted onions and potatoes yesterday. Strawberries are growing like crazy..... It's almost spring......Now watch out for the late frost...... Have a great day. The sun is shining in Georgia and calls me outside again in about 40 minutes!!!!
Nancy I knew you wouldn't stay down long. I can hear the gleeeeeee in your voice as you type. You be careful now, you hear? xxoo

Hi ya'll! I live out on Whitemarsh island just outside of Savannah's historic district. No chickens yet but hoping to get some soon! Anyone else out that way who would like to chat and share their experiences?

Keep on the sunny side,

Clare

Clare! I don't live down south but I have seen posts by other BYC folks on here that call south GA their home. I hope you find some poultry friends down by you soon but, in the meantime everyone here is made a little bit closer through this marvelous thing we call technology!

Woohoo, my first St.Patricks Day egg has pipped!

My Polish hens eye is not doing good, she can open it a little bit. It waters, I put some medicine in her water and gave her some antibiotic feed. Any other ideas to help her?
So hear is my two cents worth...I purchased a polish at the Newnan show and when I got it home it had a watery eye and nostril. I started using VetRx but by the next day the roo was sick. He had both nostrils stuffy and his eyes were swollen shut and crusty. There are two very good vets that are online at the American Silkie Bantams FB group who have helped me and other's out tremendously with chicken sicknesses. The vet on there sent me Baytril (strong drug) along with a medicated eye drop called Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone Opthalmic suspension. It took a full 7 days of treatment and he was near death. After I got him stabilized I checked and he had mites. People vary on mite treatment but one vet said to take Seven Dust and put some in a baggie, place the chicken in the baggie with just their head sticking out and coat them. We did not do that we just took some on our fingers and put it under his wings, the middle of his back and down by his tail. I have heard of birds that get a swollen eye like this and end up loosing that eye so you probably should get some help.

If you don't have an emergency kit I highly recommend it. You can purchase one online at First Valley Vet Supply (aka Dr. Brown) for $25 and it has lots of stuff in it that every chicken parent should have.

Yeah BF! Who laid it? How's your sick baby? Did you get some meds? Okay enough with all the ????'s. So happy for you congrats.

I am super excited with my first egg! I'm 90% certain that it was Lily because she is the oldest. But it's before I seperated her from the other girls so I guess we will see! The feed store was closed yesterday so I couldn't get VetRX but I ordered LA-200 and Peter Brown sent me a fb message that its on its way along with an eye cream :)) so hopefully he will be feeling better in no time!!!! She is still happily movin about and the nasal discharge has lessened considerably. So maybe it's pollen??lol. I saw a bunch on the lake on our hike so I know it's def starting!!!! :/

We are looking at either north ga between blairsville and jonesboro or south ga near waycross or ocilla .... i am guessing probably blairesville or jonesboro .... my brother is in blairsville and dear friends of family in jonesboro ..... my sister is near waycross and we just placed my mom in a nursing home in ocilla .... so several choices... but more i stay near blairsville the more I like it ....

We live in Evans County and have Buff Brahma Bantams, Light Brahma Bantams, Rhode Island Red Bantams, Barred Rock Bantams, Rare Red Dorkins, and an assortment of Brown Egg layers. Will lock down bator tommorow with a dozen buff brahma eggs, and rest will be assorted, mostly sexlinks. We enjoy raising our chickens and we also raise rabbits.
