YO GEORGIANS! :)

When did this start? I have a RIR hen that had a weird eye situation. It started sort of looking strange and it eventually clouded over and she went blind in it. I have no idea why as she is young. But for your hen I would get a container of saline drops for people who wear contacts and very gently wash out her eye by dripping the eye drops in them. Be sure to do saline and not contact solution. She may just have a piece of dirt or hay in her eye. This same hen had a tiny piece of hay caught in that same eye and it got infected and I cleaned it out with the solution and I actually got some pus out of the area it cleaned up nicely. I thought she was going blind in her other eye but she seemed to recover and it doing ok.

I have her in a smaller run area with my Mille Fleur d'Uccles because they are sweet. She was getting picked on really badly because she was handicapped and the others sensed her weakness.
I agree you should separate her from the other girls until she recovers because she may get picked on because they will sense she isn't well.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I was just telling Clark that those pine trees are going to be producing their wonderful greenish yellow pollen that will cover everything, YUCK. Glad Dr. Brown could get you the meds. At least you'll have them for Lily if needed or the other two if they start to come down with the same thing.

I'm not really sure where Evans county is but we're glad you're here. Sounds like you have some nice breeds and then bunnies too to top it off.

Becky come in and sit awhile and tell me all about your polish! We just purchased two, a WC Chocolate Frizzled pullet and a Khaki Smooth feathered cockerel. We will be adding some more polish pullets to our breeding pen soon. We also have silkies!

Thank you so much for sharing this opportunity with us! How very sweet of you.

I can see your wanting to live in Blairsville where it's a tad bit cooler. The hospice nurse I had for my mom has a place up in Blairsville, I think, that I'm sure she would like to sell as she is in Florida now taking care of her own parents.

to hear this Becky. I hope the power came back on so your other babies will be okay.
Yes, I am dreading pollen season!!!! And I am so glad I have the meds from Dr. Brown. Always good to have just in case!

This is chirpy's mom's mother, I guess that is what you would call my daughter. She is either out at the chicken pens or on the computer looking everything up about chickens she can find.

Okay I can barely use my right thumb from hammering avery spare chance I can grab on the weekend and some week nights...The coop is sooo close to being done. I have a questions regarding run toppers. Hardware wire seems the easiest way to protect my girls from air and climbing attackers. Here is Georgia is a hard cover really necessary?

we used chicken wire on the top of our run for protection and to keep the chickens in.

most of mine are covered with wire and/or a tarp, the wire is for the numerous flying predators, and the tarp is for cover from rain, also keep the feeders undr them

Yes, JoTaylor, that parthogenesis stuff is quite heady. Apparently as the literature says it does occur in hatchery white leghorns as well barred rockers and some other breeds. What it means as I understand it, is that it will show a "fertility spot" and embryonic development BUT it will not continue upon incubation......

So if these are indeed parthogenetic birds the eggs will not develop all the way out. If one or both develops all the way there is a roo amongst you. My hubby just cracked up when i told him what I learned..... He shook his head and said Only I would search and search for something like that..... I am not poultry obsessed, I am not, LOL, I am a land called Denial......Ha....Keep us posted on those birds..... I found it fascinating that this was recent research as it really does cut in the earnings for big commercial hatcheries! I never thought about that because I never knew about this....... Have a great one and good luck on the hatching.
So I was thinking it was just the parthogenesis stuff, but I cracked open 2 that are from another chicken (not sure of the breed) and they appear to be fertilized too! It has to be nugget, the young chicken. When do roosters start crowing? The only sound it makes is a like a squeak when it gets scared. So strange. . . .

Sounds good to me. I made my run walls tall enough for my almost 7 foot hubby to walk in so the run walls are taller than the coop roof line. Wire is forgiving and will mold to fit so I don't have critter gaps. Your thought are much appreciated :)

usually around 3-4 months, about the same time the pointed saddle(back) and hackle(neck) feathers come in.

these are saddle feathers coming in on a young roo, about 4 months in this pic.

This is him about 2 months older, before he went to a coworkers flock
