YO GEORGIANS! :)

Hi Folk...if you remember I'm new to keeping chickens this year and have a couple of questions for folks that are experienced. I have 20 hens + one rooster that are 6 months + 1 week of age. I got my first egg 5 weeks ago and I'm getting 15 a day now for the past 5 days. Does that seem average or will this number go up and down? For you folks that sell your eggs, how did you go about getting your customers. My chickens are free range over 10 acres and have food, oyster shells and grit available inside the coop and out and have all been very healthy, we got them as day old and still have all. I know I can search for some answers but prefer to get the info from my GA neighbors. Thanks!
If you plan to sell eggs away from your home, you will need to get an egg candlers license. They are free from the GA Dept of Agriculture. You will need to sign up for a class and take a test before you get one. If the customers come to your home, you won't need one. I sell my chicken eggs for $4/dozen, my duck eggs for $5/dozen. I sign up for the farmers market in the Spring and Summer, but also have regular customers My banker and the local chiropractors office keep me sold out. (Plus, our renters get their first dozen free and then they buy extras to take home) I also have lots of small eggs that are given to our needy neighbors. You may want to ask your friends and neighbors first, then business folks that you deal with on a regular basis. It is an easy sell!

I totally agree, Becky!! I think that every TIME I look at my roo's humongous spurs.. If he were mean I'd cut them but when I think of it I'm like, why? He's just a good boy. I'm actually super sad I'll be replacing him and have no idea what I'll do with him. :(

Sounds about right for this time of year. Remember it takes 24-26 hours from one egg to the next, if that time falls at dusk or overnight they obviously won't lay till the next morning. shorter daylight hours will cut the number of eggs per day.

Some will provide extra light to prolong the day so to speak, but to me, thats interfering with nature giving them a break.... Which is why i won't do it.

I have picked up my customers on craigslist and word of mouth. I do give away some too, as I have some neighbors who need all the help they can get
Thank you PapaChaz...I got another 15 today and still have a couple of hens with a pink head. I appreciate the info, it seems that's exactly what's happening.

I made a facebook page for my eggs. Put some pics of the girls, and some pics of dozens of eggs.
I sell for $3/doz and rarely have more than a dozen at my house.
I have a few customers who buy me out regularly.
Thanks feathersaloft...The donkey is really cute. We had an equine operation with quarter horses and ponies and the newborn were always fun to watch

Thanks Flowerbh....that is some good info. My wife has signed us up for the egg candling class. I was thinking $4/dozen as the eggs are starting to get large. We are giving some eggs away, pickling eggs and we're eating more eggs. My wife has a facebook page with lots of friends so she will post there now knowing we can sell from our home. Thanks again!

Used her Gmail address, the problem is that I am not wanting eggs to hatch or bitty, rather something more like 6- 8 weeks or older that's the problem.
She has grown birds, I got birds that were already laying so hound her, lol

And baby donk has a name. Her parents are Mary Margaret Guadalupe and Jose Cuervo (these are the names they came with) So baby is Margarita, or Rita for short :)
Since momma donkey doesn't mind if I borrow her, I took Rita to TSC in Cartersville to look for halters.
You know the smallest horse ones, labelled 'foal' are for 100-200 lbs. Not even close!
This is a sheep halter. Doesn't exactly fit right, but the idea is just for her to be used to be handling her head. So I put it on and take it off in about 10 minutes.
And my sheep will wear it afterwards. :)
OMG love it, wish I knew you were going I would have come to see her.

I will take him and if you have an old wife I'll take her too but he will have the young pretty things to chase.

Katsdar I will probably take you up on that! <3 And he actually DOES have an old lady with him. She makes a great broody when she wants but hasn't laid in egg in months.

All from a tick, thanks for sharing, wish I had a step as a vet, but then he would quickly disown me I'd cost him too much.

Yes I have a really big boy I call John Boy any way he is known to get extra attention. I do think they get jealous.
You contacted mtn laurel ? Was she shipping? find out if they are coming to GA, maybe I can meet up with them, that is how I picked up my birds I got from her, last year but then a predator did a number on my flock and lost my Nankins I have gotten from her, I was looking to get some more very nice tame birds. Her husband shows rabbits so maybe their is a show close. You can put a LF hen with them, do you have a youngest one? If not anyone close you can borrow one for the winter?

My DH tells me to kiss him so he can say I had a pecker on my lips, can I say that here?
