YO GEORGIANS! :)

So, looks like cream legbar go broody. I haven't collected eggs in a little bit because of some annoying roosters in the pen. Went in today and couldn't find a cream legbar pullet. Thought she got out but when I went to look in the nest box I was greeted by dinosaur noises. I have no clue how many or what she's sitting on. I have cl, a Delaware, and a silver laced waynadotte or however you spell it. All the boys are cl.

Yes, our CCLs go broody all the time! Glad our 5 roosters are sweethearts and don’t even look our way! Can you pick the hen up? When I put eggs under our broodies, I mark them with a heart. I use a red magic marker so that I can tell which eggs she is sitting on. The other hens may go into the nest with her and lay their eggs. Since I mark them, I know which ones to leave and which ones to gather. You don’t want to have a ton of eggs developing at different times. That becomes a nightmare! I try to get the hens to sit on their eggs in a certain area that is my ‘maternity’ ward, but sometimes they insist on other more used areas.

Well, she was eyeing me in a very unfriendly way when I saw her in there. There's another nest box that actually is the one that gets used more. And the roosters are getting processed this weekend, except for one nice guy. I'll check on her one night soon and see what she has going on. I did a staggered hatch once and it didn't end so great, so I'm careful. Just never had a big girl go broody before. Some have thought about it, but never fully went for it. Just my silkie and showgirl go broody on the regular and they are in a different pen.

Well Bruce and Linda here is an update on my first Silkie hatch. Out of the 4 eggs Satin was sitting on one oops chick 2 Frizzles and one Satin sizzle.
The 2 Frizzles are silkie feathering four toes black leakage I think that is what it's called. The Satin is splash.

There was one of Cutie Pies eggs under another hen that had been stepped on and cracked a day or two before it was ready to hatch. The chick in that egg, because it had been broken so badly hatched a day early and pipped at the wrong end of the egg so I didn't put a picture up of that chick. However the chick was a fighter and mama hen took good care of it. I had a hard time not intervening with the process of this chick. Today however the chick is 5 days old and doing well despite the odds. Here it is Cutie Pies only surviving chick being cared for by my seasoned mama hen.

I love that that chick survived! So cute!

I got 4 heartbeats when I candled the duck eggs today at day 5. 3 I'm uncertain of. And one started but has a crack and got a blood ring. 4 look to be infertile, but I'm giving them a few more days.

Also, I got a pair of quail. Lol. If you all have any tips on keeping them happy, share away.View attachment 1177308
The darker one looks like a "wild-type" coturnix. Normal, typical color. I'm not sure about the lighter one. Probably a different type of coturnix. If the darker one has a solid light brown breast then it's a male. If it's speckled then it's a female. They look rough.
Coturnix need 1 male to 4-6 females. Paired one to one the female will get seriously abused.
Cage floor should be 1/2" x 1" wire mesh. Sides can be anything up to 1" x 2" but I'd recommend something smaller as they will stick their head through it. Height of the cage should be 12". Anything taller, they will fly when startled and bonk their heads. Possibly getting a concussion or a broken neck.
Feed should be a high protein gamebird. Starter feed should be 26-30% protein. Layer is about 20-24%. They like a sand dust bath, but if you leave it in all the time, they'll poop in it and lay eggs in it. I put a dust pan in once a week for them.
They look old enough to be laying. If you give them additional light, they'll start laying in a couple of weeks. PM me if you have more questions.

Yup, they are coturnix. It's a male and female and the female laid me a pretty egg today. They are rough but I'm working on it. There was feather picking going on. They were only a dollar. I did put in a dust bath and the female loves it. It's super cute. Can I just add more females or will they fight like chickens? I'm working on making them an outdoor pen. They're just in a guinea pig cage for now.

What is with my chickens! Not only do I have 6 broodies, but they all have suddenly (after years) discovered that they can go over the fence! More and more each day are jumping the fence! And, I'm afraid they might decide they want to lay their eggs in the goat house instead of the chicken nests! That won't be fun! I guess I will have to start clipping some wings!
