YO GEORGIANS! :)

Well, I sold another 6 hens today. I was trying to sell the ones that keep hopping the fence. I was sad to see them go....but, that just means I can keep some of the new ones I will be hatching soon, right???? Hatch due Feb 3!

On a good note, I have joined the Local Dawson Harvest. They advertise local foods and you get orders for your products. Then, you just deliver the products on Fridays and you pick up your check! They put the orders together and the customers just pick them up. So far, I have orders for 6 dozen eggs! And, that was the first day! Yay!

Good for you! Sounds like you're onto what might be a profitable business.

So being new to the hobby my brain is constantly thinking of things chicken right now. It's mostly around the design of my coop but the one real worry I have is getting the birds. It's going to be a small setup and the birds that I would like to have are (1) Barred Rock, (1) Speckled Sussex and then (1 or 2) Easter Eggers or Rhode Island Reds for a total of 4 birds.
So how do I plan to find and get these all at the same time or at least within a week so I can raise them in a brooder. I would like to start sometime in March.

I also posted this as a new thread in the Raising Baby Chicks forum.

Hey fellow Georgians - New guy here doing lots of reading. Brand spanking new to the raising chickens world. At the moment I haven't even started yet but I've got to get moving on this. Planning on building a coop/run but not quite sure how yet. It's hard to find any real good (free) plans to build from and my lack of experience with coops prevents me from jumping in. If anyone has or knows of any I'd love to have the opportunity to see them. Let me know.
I'm only planning on having 4 layers as I don't want to get overrun with daily eggs. I've got a few breeds picked out so I'll see what's available when I get the coop complete. At the moment I think my first choice is a Speckled Sussex.

Anyhow, love reading all the info.

Well that stinks! My wife and I are heading out the next day for a week long anniversary trip. My plan was to get birds a week or two after our return. Gotta get to figgerin'.

I might go though just to check it out and see what it's all about and how it works.
Look on craigslist and maybe you can find just what you like. The only other way I can think is to order specifically what you want from a hatchery that will ship small shipments. The Georgia Mad Hatcher has easter eggers/ameraucanas. I'm not sure if he has the other breeds.
