YO GEORGIANS! :)

My day started horribly!!! I woke up to 5 chickens and 1 runner duck dead....we think bear! My coop is pretty much impenetrable except for the door. It was always the weakest part. Well, the door was torn down! I am sick. It killed my RIR, the one that ALWAYS laid an egg every day....maybe she would miss a one day in 2 months! My Silkie, my brooder. I am sure she was trying to protect her baby...baby is fine. My Welsummer and my Speckled Sussex, who I had always wanted! And, it got my beautiful Blue Laced Red Wyandotte roo I was just asking you guys about! If I would have sold him yesterday, he would have been alive! It also got my Runner Duck! I think it got the female....bummer! I am sooo sad! One of our renters said she her a ruckus about 4 in the morning. Uggg.....the bear was here the night before, too. Got one of my bird feeders off the deck. So now, I will be on bear alert for sure! I am heart broken about my chickens and duck!

I say you make a New bear rug! ;) sorry to hear about your chickens i was gonna buy some of those chicks for sure ik id be sick tho if it happened to me

Thanks everyone. We have now fortified the door and gone to town and to get some electric fencing. We will get our game camera out and put it up to make sure it was a bear. What makes me really upset was that we have an interior door that separates the parts of the run. It has been swinging closed and the hens who prefer the nest on one side or the other get mad because they would be closed off from their favorite nest until I went out in the mornings and reopened the door. Well last night, I tied it open so it wouldn't swing shut. If I hadn't have tied it open, the bear would probably not have killed so many hens. (There is a small hen door in the interior door) I think the chickens would have gone thru the chicken door and not the bear! Bummer!

The weird thing was last night I dreamed that someone had put all my chickens in three boxes and set fire to them. I dreamed that I couldn't save one box, but did save the other two boxes full of chickens. When I woke up this morning, my first comment to my husband was that "I dreamed of murder and mayhem!" I must have somehow known thru my subconscious that something had happened!

Anyway, guess I need to go get some new chickens! Will be looking for RIR, Welsummer, BLRW (want splash and blue), and a Speckled Sussex.

Oh yea, we realized that the duck that survived the attack is the female! Thank God!

I am so sorry about your loss. I think the electric fence will work. There aren't many animals that will stand up to an electric fence. I have a low one about a foot off of the ground about 8 inches from the fence that i figure will stop stop racoons, opossums, foxes and dogs. Then I have a taller one about 3 feet away and 2 feet high to stop larger animals. I also have a Lab that I keep in that area that will help keep some of the varmints away. I use 3/4 inch PVC pipe to support the wire. I screw short pieces of pipe to my fence posts fo rthe one next to the fence and I drive the pipies up like stakes for the higher wire around the outside. I attach the wire to the pipe using about a 4" piece if the fence wire. I wrap it around the wire and pull it around the back of the post and wrap it around the wire on the other side.

After the bear killed 5 chickens and one duck in the coop, last night was the first night ever that the chickens didn't go back to the coop after free ranging for the day! We called and called them and some of them came back for a treat, but we had to go search for 8 of them. Found them in all sorts of trees and bushes and ledges! They did not want to go back to their roosts in the coop! Poor babies! They have never done that before. Wonder how long those awful memories will last!
