YO GEORGIANS! :)

Wow, 300! That's a good sized flock! I'm hoping to build up my flock, and I'll be looking for some game &/or banty hens around October, once I get my second coop ready. I already have a game rooster (thought it was a hen), which I have separated in his own little pen right now.

Out of all my chickens, I love my marans the best. So far they have been the most laid back and hardy of my hens. I'd love to expand & get other types of marans to mix up the flock a little.

Do you raise marans, and if so, which kind(s)?

One of my marans died in my arms on Friday afternoon. Sour Crop. I've lost chickens due to free ranging before, but it was so hard watching her die in my hands.

I tried emptying out her crop, but it was too late. There was so much stuck in there, that she couldn't get it all out, and she choked. I cried like a baby.

I've definitely learned from this experience. I was completely ignorant of chicken illnesses, so it's my own fault for not noticing the issue sooner. It's likely I could've saved her if I had acted sooner. So now I'm spending more time educating myself on the most common illnesses & the symptoms, so I'll know what to look for.

Ummm, those would not be hawks. Hawks do not fly in groups and they don't circle. The only time you may see two together is a mom with a young or a mate. You are looking at Vultures. Vultures circle in search of something dead. They will not harm your live chickens.
Very possible we have the lone hawk over the pastures usually. This group was really weird to see, straight out of a cheesy western. We have had turkey vultures on the property before. They had a dare game between Hubby in his truck and their spot new to the drive (nothing dead to be seen around them). Hubby eventually done...guess they decided his truck was bigger.

So sorry for your loss. My Hubby was making fun of my constant online, books and Magazine reading about chickens. He did that is until I pulled some needs out of my reference bag for a couple chicks and our dogs. Knowledge is power add it to experience and we all get better every day. I'm just starting off ask countless questions.

I will be raising Marans. I have 3 French black pol pullets and 3 Roos. I am waiting for them to finish growing up so i can decide which roo i want to keep. They are almost adult sized. I have 4 cuckoo maran hens that are not laying yet and I am waiting on 12 golden cuckoo maran eggs to get here from out west. They are in shipment right now and I will have them Under a hen by the end of the week as well as 24 French black copper, splash, and blue maran eggs. I am hoping to have my maran projects up and running by next spring. It takes time to get it all up and running. Keep me in mind when you get ready to buy some chicks. I am trying to sell some red Pyle modern game banties and some bb red game banties right now. They are real pretty birds. I was going to keep them myself but I have decided against breeding the banties because I have had a real hard time selling them.

I only have a few Marans so far. I have a blus hen and a splash roo. I have 5 chicks that are 4 weeks now. Loving them so far. So mic more layed back and smarter than my other birds.

I'll certainly do that! My goal is to triple my flock by Spring. I only have 10 chickens, so that shouldn't be hard. I'm trying build it up slowly.

This fellow needs a home. He came with our farm when we bought it a few months ago with 5 RIR hens. He is a very good free range Roo. Always looking out for his girls. He is an RIR, I'm guessing from hatchery lines. NW GA area.
