YO GEORGIANS! :)

In other news, FOUR total eggs have hatched so far, and despite all of them being in the incubator together, they're a giant chorus coming from it every few seconds.

Both silkies are still alive and... there's a possum in the trap!

Specifically, there is a baby possum in the trap. Not a VERY young baby, but definitely not full-grown yet! Probably a baby from last spring. I've caught several of them in that trap before, and all of them were huge compared to this one.

This is the only reason I let my son have a dog. When we first moved here, before I bought chickens, I was finding tracks everywhere! Possum, raccoon and coyote. Since we got the dog, no more night critters, but I still have to worry about hawks during the day. And we have to tie the dog because he's still a puppy but weighs about 70lbs and he wants to "play" with the chickens. His play has resulted in me loosing my 2 gorgeous ameracuana roosters. But he's super protective of all of us, the rabbits and the chickens (if they're penned) so he gets to stay

My sister's dog has killed many of my chickens, unfortunately. The smaller puppy is fine (she's a chihuahua yorkie mix) but the bigger dog - an austrailian shepherd/lab mix - like to chase, grab, and shake.

That's why they stay penned up now, too. But the possum apparently found a way to climb in to the pen to kill the hen yesterday. NOT ANYMORE THOUGH!

Anyone want to adopt the possum for... um... the freezer? Animal control won't kill them (they kill Raccoons though) and I definitely don't want to release him anywhere near here! I may just call Daucets' Trails and see if they want to adopt him. He's a baby, so they will probably take him in.

We can't keep guns on the property here. One of the kids is mentally retarded, and extremely unreliable. It would probably be a death sentence keeping a gun here.

I dont have issues with predators, but I have 2 cats. My cats were raised with the chickens, so they dont mess with them. The cats keep all the smaller critters away, while my pellet rifle keeps the big ones away. I've warned a couple of the neighborhood dogs with a shot to the hind legs. They don't come back too soon after that.

Plus, I have long spikes around the runs, hammered into the ground. If anything tries to dig underneath them, they're in for an unpleasant surprise

I have a Lab that is in the back yard with the chickens. I have a huge Cornish X Rooster that I keep in a tractor because all of the other chickens pick on him. I put a pine straw bed in the tractor foor the rooster and left some of it laying beside the tractor. I went out and the Lab was sleeping on the outsidenext to the rooster pn the inside. The Lab gets along with all of the chickens and the Mallard ducks until the ducks start to fly and he gets excited and cannot resist chasing them. I like him being there because he keeps the varmints and other dogs away.

My cats are great companions to my chickens - and the chicks!

But the dogs are different. Part of the reason I'm excited about getting the sebastopol goose eggs, is that I hope the dogs will finally harass the wrong "bird" and learn from it. I plan to supervise the geese with the dogs, and it might sound kinda bad, but I actually WANT a goose to bite a dog. They'll get over it, but I need them to learn the poultry is OFF LIMITS!

Hey everyone!
I'm Lori and I live in Jefferson, Ga. I have speckled sussex, silver laced wyandottes and americaunas.
My first 12 pullets and cockrels were killed in an overnight massacre but replacement sussex started laying New Years day. Am getting about 3 eggs a day right now from 10 hens. SLW haven't started laying yet but have switched feed to layer. Is that ok?
