You ever tried taking a pic of a baby chick on a table? They either turn their butt to you, or run to the other side REALLY fast! LOL!
 
Phew! That's a lot of pages to read through, and I can just barely keep up with the conversations (or maybe not), lol! I'm glad that we all seem to have survived the ice storm relatively well and that incubators and hatchings are all chugging right along. Talk about chick fever! I'm thinking I'd like some EE's, but it seems just about everyone has either mixes or a long waiting list. I'll have to think more about that, and see if my two current girls will resume laying when we get a bit warmer. Ducks are also intriguing, but hubby says no -too noisy and the pool thing is a turn -off. (Running water isn't a commodity we have on the farm until after taxes -so we can run water from the road. Electricty we have, but not near the animals -go figure). Reading about everyone's plans makes me think about new projects at our place, but...

I just couldn't even post yesterday because I was worried sick about my birds and bunnies :(. Our house is home to a menagerie of critters, but the poultry and rabbits reside on a seperate property 15 minutes away -totally inaccessible during ice storms. I gave everyone extra food tuesday evening, and made sure waterers were full, but I knew they would all freeze overnight and not thaw yesterday; I was a wreck by this morning waiting for the roads to thaw. My chickens did well; I put some emergency waterers (those water-jug cat waterers) in their coops, and they were only partially frozen. Most of their feeders had plenty of food left too. The turkeys had plenty of food, but their waterers froze, so they were drinking out of a puddle in the corner of their pen -ick! The rabbits were all thirsty, but only a few were out of food. Half of my rabbits are on an auto watering system, but the lines freeze fast. The other half are on water bottles, and the metal stems freeze first, then the bottles. The water bottles had frozen at half capacity, and were mostly thawed when I arrived this afternoon so those bunnies were drinking. The auto -water bunnies were glad when I filled their bucket!

My only concern after checking everyone over, other than the muck in the chicken runs, is one New Zealand Doe with what appears to be significant bloody discharge from her vulva. She is six months old, and her first attempt at breeding was just last week -unsuccessful. She was part of a group just purchased three weeks ago and supposed to have been unbred, so unless something happened before i got her, she shouldn't be pregnant. I don't have much luck palpating, but she doesn't look bigger at all. I'm sure it's not the reddish tinge that rabbits can sometimes have to their urine -it's definately blood, and thick. I'm thinking I'll most likely have to cull her in the morning :(.
Sigh.... even hobby farming can be tough. I wouldn't trade it for anything though.

PS. -my 12 replacement BO eggs (after the dog catastrophy) are on day 6 in the incubator -with all of them developing well. Mother Nature takes some, and she gives some, but she makes you work for it all!
