I was thinking the broody Russian Orloff would have a better hatch rate than me- guess not with all of the extra eggs. After putting her eggs that she left for the two first-hatched chicks in the bator the next three chicks that hatched smelled bad when I took them out for the brooder. Time for float test and eggtopsies! 3 of the broody's eggs were rotten stinkers. There were a few that had quit later in development but the last chick to hatch came on Friday. Can you believe my husband got mad at me for taking her eggs that she left to ensure survival of the chicks that hatched Monday and Tuesday? Yep, he didn't understand that she abandoned the nest to care for the chicks:-( Well, all are doing great- even the chick she left on top of the eggs. I clear it's eye a few times a day because the ants bit it and it will seal shut. Good thing I saw that it HAD an eye before going in the brooder or I may have freaked out! Good luck on hatching. I am to the point of being glad the bator will be off soon- humidity seems to be the biggest point to wstch carefully.
