YO GEORGIANS! :)

So about ten days ago I snuck out to Cleremont to get one Speckled Sussex. (Like 40 miles from me!) The lady showed me one chick after another. They were all slow feathering chicks. They had no tail feathers and their wing feathers screamed boy! You know, where the primary feathers are longer than the secondary feathers. Finally, she brought one out that was only two weeks old but had lots of tail and the wing feathers were all the same length. I took it, all smug in my knowledge that I chose a girl. Well, it's been 10 days since I brought it home and wouldn't you know it, the chicks wattles are at least 1/4 inch long already and its comb is turning pink! HOW DID THIS HAPPEN! ???? There are two chickens I don't think God wants me to have, a Speckled Sussex and a BLRW! Every time I try to have one, it either gets eaten by a bear, a hawk or it is a boy! Ugh!

So, what do you think. Boy, right? (Chick on right)

Anyone have blue andalusians? I have 1 hen and I call her Trouble. Before we built the chicken tunnel she was always getting out of the run and walking all over the yard. Made the tunnel now they have access to a huge yard. Close to an acre. Well she has started pecking me when I come to feed snacks, chases me through the yard, just a mean little thing. She doesn't hurt me, just chasing and pecking. She is the smallest of my chickens, so maybe she is just trying to act big? I didn't know hens were mean. Or maybe she is mad because we say she belongs in a boy band with her floppy comb.... She also doesn't really let anyone touch her unless I corner her to pick her up.

Actually I only have 4(a speckled Sussex, a barred rock, because she is my lumpy one and 2 white rocks) out of 16 chickens that will let me touch them. I sit in the grass and I feed them treats from my hand and they will eat but won't let me touch them. I want nice chickens and thought I chose breeds that were docile and friendly... Not so much. My EEs won't eat out of my hand or come near me. They just yell at me. Anyone else have anti social, grumpy chickens?

Hey all! My girls are 17 1/2 weeks old. They will be 18 weeks on Sunday. I assume they should start laying soon. Do I need to do anything special other than give them some nesting boxes with some straw or shavings? Do chickens lay anytime of the day or is it mostly first thing in the morning?

We also recently built a chicken tunnel giving them access to the backyard, so they have TONS of space now and seem much happier. We still haven't finished our big coop though. There have been so many other little projects that we have had to deal with. Comes with the territory of buying a new house. haha Hopefully soon. For now they are in a smaller coop.

Cool ... a chicken Habi-trail!

Anyone else's chicks do this? Seems like any time I have babies in this long brooder, they stay wayyy down at the far end from the light. Granted, underneath the light is a bit warm, but I have a thermometer at both ends and where they are is only 85*. I don't really worry for them, just think it's strange. They still do normal chickie baby stuff like eat, drink and play and sleep..

400

When my girls were babies they did the same thing. I was constantly raising the heat lamp and never seemed to get it to where they would stay under it. I think if they are eating, drinking, sleeping and playing normally, don't worry.

Wow. Poor Flower. She is down for the count and Ms B just jumps right in there with a bag of salt for the wounds.
