Really? I was expecting them to start laying for you already. But then again, I just read somewhere that reality is that most of the time it's 26-30wks before they start laying. Large breeds, anyway. Not saying it doesn't happen earlier, based on everyone's experiences shared here. I guess it means that there's nothing wrong with them if they don't start til then. Sophia's about to start week 28. In her case, I think it has everything to do with her being at the bottom of the pecking order (did I mention I hate the pecking order? she is the sweetest, gentlest chicken out there) because she is developing the slowest. I noticed today she really doesn't get much to eat, or a whole lot of treats. I knew this was the case but I didn't realize until today, just how much she's left out. Glad I started beefing things up for her in the last couple weeks. I took to separating her out a tiny bit when the others aren't paying attention and giving her a little extra just to make sure she gets something. As far as the signs, her wattles & comb are about where the others were when they started, all the red faced stuff, but mainly I noticed she's 'practicing'. I'll go check for eggs from the other 2 and notice a nice little nest carved out in the bedding. I know it's her because each bird has chosen a specific spot of their own when they were doing it. And I notice she'll start to run up the ramp to go back in the coop as if she's on a mission. then she comes back out a couple minutes later like it was a false alarm. The other 2 did the same. I expect her to lay one in the next couple of weeks, I guess. I'm glad we only have 3 old enough to lay right now. It gives me a chance to figure out who's laying what where.
