YO GEORGIANS! :)

Friday was a bad poultry day here in Draketown. Checked the quail and had one dead in the cage. No signs of trouble, so I'm guessing old age.

Fed the chickens and one of the hens had her guts hanging out. Not sure what happened there. No sign of a predator.

THEN the rat snake. See, the brooder boxes are in the garage. I had opened the garage door to let in some fresh air. I was in the kitchen and heard the chicks going wild. Looked out there and this huge snake was in the brooder box and had swallowed one of the 3 week old chicks. He tried to climb out but couldn't get his big belly over the edge.

So, @GAMarans I caught him and then showed him the business end of a shotgun. Needless to say, he will not be eating anymore baby chicks.

Quote: I ran out of propane. Darn turkey apparently got a stay of execution.

I'm sorry.

I know that you need it so just let me know when you want to swing by.

On a better note, this hatch is going well. I've had to assist a few. They zip around and then the membrane dries out before the come out. Lazy little buggers.

As for my blue egg marans, last year I had all the hens separated from the roosters for a couple of months. Then I moved them all out here to the farm and put them in hoop tractors with their respective roosters so I could keep hatching pure breeds. I then waited a month before incubating any eggs. Well, one of those maran hens lays blue eggs. I hatched a couple of hers just to see what they would look like and other than one of them has partially black feet, they look just like french black copper marans. Feathered feet, blackish beaks and blond bottoms.

That is (was) a nice looking snake. Seriously ... always have room for them at the house. House, NOT farm. Sorry about your bird losses, though.

Still gotta raise the WTH flag on a Marans laying blue eggs.

I'm tired. Why can't there be a day when we can just sit around and do nothing. Maybe read a good book on the swing chair on the porch or something!? Why am I my age and still have to get up early? There is always so much to do!!! The daylily beds have to be weeded and remulched. I haven't even cleaned out the old garden yet. The left over 'greens' have gone to flowering and are about as tall as I am! Haven't even checked to see if the figs and blueberries made it thru the winter. DH didn't even let me finish putting on my makeup before he was telling me to hurry and come help him do this and that! Got to spend the day working on the coop today. Baby ducks are pipping. Renters leave tomorrow, sooooo. 10 million pounds of laundry to do, beds to make, trash to collect, kitchen to restore to order (really whole house to restore to order!) It goes on and on......

Just would like one day with a good book!

AND, I would like to not feel guilty for doing it!

Flower, everybody needs/deserves that! Just one day.. You guys should make it a point to do just that one day soon before it's too hot to enjoy outside! It can surely be done to free up JUST one day! Could you guys maybe hire some help for the one day, or a couple afternoons to make up for it?

Nice, ericinga! I locked down my eBay Cochins and some barred rock last night. These are the Cochins where the Lav/black split eggs did fairly well (and still look good!), but only two silver laced were fertile. Now only one silver laced looks like it actually grew appropriately but I left the other in just bc it is at least moving. But I think it's severely under grown.

Got to candle the replacement silver laced eggs for that first time and it looks like 5 or 6 or of 12 will grow. So still not good at all but I only paid for shipping so oh well. :)
