Ok, question. Can a chicken be male and female? I have noticed red spots on the yolks in some eggs and today I saw my one RIR hen, whose laying again, mount my Black Star who should be laying any time now since her incident. The RIR was literally mating her. I don't have a rooster and always just attributed the red spots to previous roosters. They were brown for a while and then started turning more red.

Female hens turning into males can happen but is varyy rare. But males can't turn into females.

I think it happens when a hen has something wrong with her parts but I don't think the rooster hen is ever fertile.
I only heard about Rooster hens a while back on the BBC
