YO GEORGIANS! :)

I have 3 Leghorn Chicks remaining from my 4/4 hatch. I had someone on craigslist that was supposed to come by this AM and buy the 3 but flaked out - frustrating part is the person that bought the rest wanted all of them but I held them back for the other buyer. Anyway - they're going to be flying out of their bin in the next day or two and I don't feel like setting up the brooder.

Anyone interested? $2/piece

where are you located Josh

I bought a black copper Maran rooster from someone and since I got him none of my eggs seem to be fertile. He is at least a year old and the lady I bought him from said he needs a lot of hens. What for? He doesn't breed with them and he and my original rooster fought and now my original rooster has a hurt leg and won't breed anymore. Anyone have any advice on what to do to get him to breed? Also I bought two black copper Maran hens from someone else and they told me they were hatched last august but they still aren't laying and they are 33 weeks tomorrow unless t
he lady was mistaken on their age.

Sometimes a rooster just doesn't get the job done. I like to put two or three hens per rooster in the breeding pens. However, you shouldn't have a hard time finding another Marans rooster. Heck, I can't even give away a nice FBCM cockerel (for free!) that I have available. I also currently have 27 Marans chicks, and I'm sure I'll have lots of cockerels that I will be giving away in a few weeks.

As for your Marans hens, we're just coming out of the low-light (winter) season, so be patient. Your girls should start laying any day now.

Are you giving the hens egg layer pellets and making available crushed egg shells (or something similar like oyster shell)? If a hen's diet is not right, or if she is stressed, that can cause her to not lay.

Brucifer thanks for your reply. I will take your rooster. Where are you located?
I am giving the hens laying pellets and my other three hens are laying just fine every day.
I just hatched 18 chicks out of 40 eggs this week.
Here is a picture of them

I've had lots of chickens who didn't start laying until they were 35 weeks old! In fact, one chicken was 50 weeks old when she laid her first egg! (Yes! I said 50 weeks!) I hatched her from an egg so I know she was that old! Ha! Just thought I'd tell you that I did read once that it's actually better if the hen is older when they start laying. But, some breeds mature later than others. I think Marans are ones that are a little later to start laying, so just wait. I also agree with Brucifer, the shorter daylight hours of winter will take the pullets longer to lay.

I just finished my hatch. I had 16 eggs go into lockdown. 12 hatched right away. 2 more were late pippers. Two never internally pipped. The late pippers never made it out. I opened the shells and found that they apparently turned wrong and ended up with their heads under their wings and suffocated

. But here are the newbies! And, 3 lovely Naked Necks! Of the 6 CCL eggs, I hatched 4 girls and one boy! (One didn't hatch) and they are all spoken for! Yay! I had the 'tiny hen' one from Lady Who, 2 CCL X Australorp (so light green egg layers), 1 EE!

I will name this Naked Neck, Skunk!
