YO GEORGIANS! :)

So many mosquitoes I don't want to go outside. I had some fly traps but they are full need more. Have a bug light out and it does some good but not enough. Sprayed for both mosquitoes and flies but it keeps raining have to spray again. Aaah! Summer is killing me. The chickens look good though.

Sue, I just don't know how you keep your white birds white! Mine all turn orangy to match the soil up here! I usually don't get white chickens just for that reason! Just go with Buffs! LOL! Your chickens are so cute!

Here is a great website that explains why you get colored eggs! It is one of the few I have found that is accurate! I have always hated when people say dumb things like Dr Oz did once when he told the world on tv that 'The only difference in egg color is that brown chickens lay brown eggs and white chickens lay white eggs" UGH!

Howdy yal!
I have a silkie rooster free to a good home. I am giving him away because I have to many roosters! We would keep him if we could, but 2 roosters to 3 hens will cause to many problems! If anyone is interested, please start a private conversation with me and we can talk details!

Ducks are so adorable!

Speaking of ducks....I have a male mallard Runner Duck. He was inside the coop by himself. That's not a normal thing so I went in to check him out. He couldn't stand so I picked him up and discovered the whole side of him was split open! From his mid stomach to almost his but! Muscle, bones and fat were all exposed! Poor baby! I took him inside and basically super glued it shut, put gauze, and wrapped it up. Gave him a good shot of antibiotic. He is resting in the garage right now. If the superglue doesn't hold, I will be out my suture kid out and stitch him up properly. Not sure what got him. We do have some big turtles in the lake right now. We have hawks and owls (but those are usually a night time problem) and there is the possibility that there is some fishing tackle left around the shore from the renters! Ugh! Tomorrow, he will get some more antibiotics. Hope he heals! He is one of my favorite Duck!

So, I was checking the temp/humidity on the incubator this morning. The temp was higher than usual and so I went to just lift the lid for a minute and noticed an egg with the top off of it! My first thought is that the egg exploded, but there wasn't any egg mess. Suddenly I see a baby chick in the corner! What??? These chicks aren't due until Sunday! The only thing I can think is that the guy whose eggs they are, must have been collecting them in a warm place and it had already started incubating! So, it is in the brooder by itself until the others hatch!

Maybe the warm weather is to blame for the early hatch. You mentioned before that you had placed some eggs under a broody hen. You also mentioned on more than one occasion that once the broody hens hatch out their eggs, they get very upset when they have their chicks taken away. Have you ever tried taking the eggs at lock-down time and finishing them off in the incubator so that the hens don't miss the chicks? Just a thought.

I think the biggest problem in doing that is that the hen just keeps being broody. She doesn't succeed in her hatching so she goes to look for more eggs again. By letting the mom have the babies for a week or so, they get it 'out of their system' and will go back to laying eggs sooner.
