I think a trio of Seramas make great apartment pets! The eggs are small, but honestly count as a serving size. They do fine in a rabbit cage type set up and I even have diapers I've made for mine, sized and cut specifically for the small Serama and their vertical wing hang. I have large (loud) parrots, but now wish all my inside birds were chickens!

There are so many pet quality wonderful Serama available that don't make the cut for breeders or showing, I'd love to see more of them kept as pets this way. They are quieter than my parrots, even the roos. The roos have the quaintest crow!

Hello and Welcome! We live just across the river from you! Savannah is our main stomping grounds. We drive through Rincon to get to "Webb's Feed" in Springfield, where we do most or our poultry food business. We raise a number of different chicken, guineas, and hopefully soon--peafowl! Silkies make great indoor pets!

Not sure who sells eggs in your part of the world. I sell my eggs to a small feed store in Hardeeville. If I hear of any one around you I will let you know!

Thanks All!

I was near Johnstown, NY which is just at the foothills of the Adirondacks' and between Albany, NY and Utica, NY.

Seramas or Silkies Hunh???? I tried to hatch a few Seramas this year and didn't have much luck (I hatched about a hundred eggs this year....)I had a bunch of Silkies (white, black partridge, grey...) but decided not to keep any of them when they hatched. I had Dellies, LF Cochins of various colors, silver phoenix, black sumatras, bantam cochins, orpingtons, Barred Rocks - both babies and our original flock we raised from babies and various other breeds. Those were some prolific gals and man they were fun!

I like being near Savannah! Hmmmm I may have to try the Seramas if I can talk my husband into it - get babies and then work on eggs. They really are cute!

Still trying to get everything in the apt organized and the same with the garage. Lucky us - we kept some of our feeders but unfortunately got rid of the cages.

Watch that Sun out there - it is hot today - still lovin it though!

ok cool.. Much farther north then where i'm from, you were in the Snow central LOL, they always seemed to get hit harder up that way then down in binghamton area. lol

I'm new to chickens.. so I know very little about them. I have no clue as to what breed our chicken is. just guess's. as she's a stray that Moved in with us and hatched baby's. we never intended on keeping her.. we were content with her visits. but then the baby's arrived. hubby suggested that I enclose our porch she had her eggs under and we just keep her and some baby's. esp since she got use to us feeding her.

Then I joined BYC and Saw pics of Silkies and Fell in love with them. as well as them I thik Seramas. they are just to cute!!

Wezl, I just googled Seramas and they are beautiful! I had not seen them before--are they a lot smaller than my OEG bantams? I love how they stand. Do you ever sell eggs? Where are you located?? Oh, my DH would lock me up if I hatched any more chicks this season!

Fyrekitten , I would've had a hard time leaving all of them behind! But I do know it can be. Serama really aren't the easiest bird to hatch! But the cool thing is, there are alot of people who are happy to share their birds, and the Serama personality is such that an older bird, raised by someone else can still bond with you! While I suppose there are the usual odd ones out that aren't so friendly, every one I have met loves being held, and get used to hanging out on your shoulder or lap in no time! They just seem wired for it!
I've hatched a few, and currently have 7 of mbrobbins that are now breeding and laying. I've got several eggs of hers in the bator, too. I started with 60, and now have about 25 with another week to go. It's just the way it is with Serama. I really love my babies that I've hatched, but the 4 I got when they were 4 months old are just as tame and friendly! One is a pretty little white roo that has a patch of red feathers under his chin, so it looks like he has a goatee! We named him Aramis after the three muskateers, but we call him Ari. We hope to get him certified as a therapy animal. He really loves to be in the house, especially when my son is here (he's 10). Ari rides in the car, gets to meet strangers, and he and my son love to tell other people about how wonderful it is to have chickens!

RedBugPoultry because there are different size classes for Serama, they can be the same size as the OEGB, or smaller. There is so much to learn about them, and I'm only just a really big fan of what I've seen first hand! They can be any color, and the sizes do vary. I've heard a lot of OEGB fans are getting into showing and raising them.

The whole story of the Serama as they are in the US is fascinating!

(I still hold out that someone gene-spliced doves with chickens to make them, LOL!)
