YO GEORGIANS! :)

i have to join in, I am in thomas county (wooooo south GA) and all this talk of rain, we get hammered atleast 4 times a week! >.> no power outages yet though <-----been lucky!

My babies are ready to go out of the brooder, and it's too hot! They back away from a 75 watt bulb (still have it on, because of the A/C in the house). These GA chickens will probably be living in the house until they are 4 months old!

Do you have a way to gradually introduce them to our heat? Perhaps early morning or evening? It would be stressful to go from AC to our Georgia heat/humidity abruptly, but doing it gradually might work.

Hey,
I have a few bantam Lav orp and Bantam Black orp cockerels free to a good home.

Please don't eat them, they're too rare to be culled right now.

You can use these to breed with bantam blue / black orps to get more Lav orps...

Super rare breed...

PM if interested.

I have a little hutch that they can hang out it in the morning, and evening. I'll let them do that, and hope that a surprise thunderstorm doesn't blow them away! Lighting hit my Mom's tree, and dug up the ground around it. I'm a worried Mom

Thanks! Pam

Each morning or evening, when the weather permits, increase the amount of outside time they get. Also introduce them to 1/4 in of water in a tray for them to walk on, keep cool water outside, and allow them to try moistened feed. All of these things can save their lives when we hit 100+ again. It also wouldn't hurt to give them electrolytes in their water when the temps get in the high 90's. Most feed stores stock it for $4 which will last the heat wave.

I am so glad you are allowing outside time. Fresh air and ventilation is very important.

I have ours in an insulated carport that has my brooder in it. I also have a 75 watt bulb in there with them that I only have to turn on at night. I have also started cracking a window higher and higher, then moving on to the next window until have all 4 of them up during the day. This has worked for my chicks that are in the coop and run now. They are 4 and a half weeks old and are as spunky as ever. I'm doing this now with my ducks and 4 more hatches. So far, this has been the way for me. I hope you find a solution. I tried having them in the house (I do keep them in the house when they are fresh out of the bator until they are at least 24 hours old). I thought I was going to be crazy! My cat thought I had him a bunch of new fuzzy squeaky toys. lol

Yeah- I have 2 different age groups in the house, and picking up more today! 3 age groups in the house! And I'm allergic! haha. I put them out for a while; the little runt poofed up to the am coolness, then they were panting by 10. We are still critter-proofing the run anyway. Maybe it will be cooler in 3 wks. 7 nine week old silkies in the house . 2 phoenix and 2 Polish @ 3 wks in the house, then 3 Polish, 2 Phoenix, and 5 more silkies, couple of days old in the house. My Mom hates chickens. She owns my house. She doesn't even know we have chickens yet!
