YO GEORGIANS! :)

hiyas everyone!. I live in Adairsville, GA .

I don't have any chickens yet, but in process of convincing my wife that we need to start raising chicken for meat and eggs. So far it looks like I'll be building one and possibly 2 hoop coops this winter to be ready for chicks in the spring.
I suggest you make your meatie pen either moveable or easy to clean out, if your getting broiler/cornishX chickens, they poop a lot. Because they are geneticly modified to be table ready in 6 weeks, they eat a lot and therefore poop alot. I wouldn't build them roosts or nest boxes, they will be to heavy to use them. I usually use a covered chainlink dog kennel with chicken wire around the bottom for my meaties, I have BB turkeys growing out right now for thanksgiving. You should also move the feed and water on opposite sides of the pen, that way they are motivated to move, otherwise they will sit inbetween the two and just sit there and eat.
Not trying to push you away from them, just some helpful hints I've learned. :D

Also, if you dont plan on leaving them whole with the skin on, I peel off the skin with the feathers still on, kind of like a jacket. Then I fillet off the breast, pop the joint, and do the same with the legs. Its alot quicker, you dont have to pluck feathers or diig out the lungs and such.

I talked about chickens with my husband for several years and I would get this uh huh bit from him, then nothing more. This last spring he went to see a friend of his for a few hours, and I went shopping at TSC. He came home to a bakers dozen of peeps.

thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I've been lurking here for the last few months. I know that meaties are poop machines and plan on making the hoop coop move able. I also plan on feeding them fermented feed as it should help reduce the real nasty poops (its still poop and therefore nasty). I have just over an acre of land out in the middle of nowhere.. my neighbors all us have chickens but don't think any are raising meaties. I'll either get Cornish X or Freedom Ranger/Red Ranger for meat and let my wife pick the layers. It'd be great to buy some chicks from someone on here.

hey everyone!

haven't been on much lately. been traveling. changing jobs. bought some new chickens from a local breeder and lost one in 2 weeks, and another last week. sent the first one off to UGA for labs and finally got that back. seems pullet was completely eaten up with bacteria, parasites and infections - including listeria. treated those that were left and hope after the following treatment in 3 weeks, i take stool samples to the vet and maybe we'll be ok and back to normal. and i won't be buying from that breeder again! (heads up: Uncle B's Feed and Seed in Ellijay.)

The Apple Festival is here this weekend and next weekend. If anyone comes up please contact me on my cell at 678.894.6355. Would love to meet up with you!

We are also looking for a Great Pyrenees female puppy. If you know of anyone in the North West Georgia area or North Metro Atlanta we would love to hear.

Husband Jon is designing Hex signs for the barn (from our trip to Indiana last month). Have a fabulous week fellow chicken lovers!!!
