I am married to a hispanic man. We met when I was 12. I am bff with his sister and spent weeks at a time at there house before I finally moved in. I speak spanish and can read it but my spelling is not that good. Most of the time people just assume I am a light skinned hispanic and will speak to me in spanish. I love the culture and the FOOD. I have been apart of this family for 18 yrs. so I blend in pretty well now LOL. As a matter of fact I can make tamales, tortillas, chille con carne.salsa and green echilladas like the best of them. LOL

AH OK! See, I wasn't sure if it was something current or not. Good for you! LOL! I have a friend, that like you, has been living around her Hispanic hubby's family so long that people just assume she's Hispanic...she's got the accent down pat. Scary! She's NOT Hispanic though, on the phone - you'd think she was. They call her, affectionately, "guera" which, you probably know, means fair/light skinned/haired one. Sometimes I forget she's NOT Hispanic too! Craziness!!!

Perhaps (OK I'm begging) one of you would like to start a thread with a few Mexican recipes? I can make a really good guacamole and I always do fresh salsa, and one of the recipes is from a hispanic lady I met in a college printmaking class.

You know you are in Indiana when noone knows what time/time zone it is!!!

You know you are in Indiana when someone says "if you don't like the weather, wait a few hours."

LOL BJ ain't that true!!!!

You know you're in (northern) Indiana when you pass Amish buggies on the roadways.

ALMOST everything they serve in restaurants is fried chicken! (and mashed potatoes)

Most of the retail stores have Country music playing over the loudspeakers.

You travel down the road, and all you see are cornfields!

"My MAN MITCH" IS not my MAN!

You tell me what you would like to make and I figure out the recipe. I don't know the measurements its a pinch of this and handful of that. But if you tell me your favorite foods I'll make them and measure out the ingredients so I can post them for you. Of course you will need beans and rice on the side.

You know you are in Michigan when you have more Canadian coins than American in your changepurse.

You know you are in Michigan when you see the migration of Mich cars heading south to the Indiana border to buy cigarettes and beer/pop.
