You might be a crazy chicken lady/gent if...Go on, post yours!

When you go to Sam's Club and you see a big ole box full of dog beds and you think..............That box would be a great brooder!

...if you willingly become a "mother's helper" to a free-range hen with 13 chicks to make sure "Mama" doesn't wear herself out, and the peeps don't starve to death. Seeing how much they all preferred bugs to grain and feed from the farm store, I began searching for bugs (that was 3 weeks ago), and it has become a daily ritual! I don gloves, grab my flower gardening tools and a recycled ice cream bucket and "scratch" for an hour minimum every day. I look under every door mat, garbage can, flower pot, cinder block, brick, "anything" that touches the ground which isn't nailed down or permanently attached in some way. The way you can tell I'm a crazy chicken woman? Once I do find the bugs, I often talk (aloud) to them before I grab them: "You can run, but you cannot hide... You think you're fast do you?... Not fast enough buddy, the babies are hungry and you, my friend, are about to meet your destiny to be somebody's lunch!, breakfast, etc." I get a "thrill" when I find a lot of bugs at one time... or an earthworm where I didn't expect it! When I've found all I can, or run out of energy... I look forward to feeding my family their high-protein diet! It "makes my day" to see all my "little guys/girls" come running when I call "chick-chick, chick-chick" :

My husband and I were recently told... "You guys really need to go out and find some friends!" Need I say more?

I spent an hour last night with the color calculator (and a real math calculator) figuring out all the possible colors/patterns I could get from my mixed flock. I have a broody on 6 eggs (none hers!) and wanted to know what might come out. (if you're curious, I am looking at +/- 30% black, 30%blue, 6%barred, and 34%some combination of blue/black laced red/gold)

I also have spent the last 4 hours daydreaming of a future breeding projects...and excitedly planning every detail.

And I still have a dozen chicks (now in the ugly phase!) in my bathtub.

I daydream about building the ultimate breeding pens and who will I breed from this season and who to purchase fertile eggs from.

My husband keeps threatening that he is putting a bed out in the chook pen for me!
