Anywhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains is glorious!! I'm in GA and have one of the lowest millage rates in the state. Mine run about $600 for the year for a nice house overlooking a creek and an acre of land. We only got school taxes about 10 years ago, and tags for my older pick 'em up truck are about $25 a year with no waiting at the tag office

Not much traffic, either. Although property values have dropped, like everywhere, ours didn't take as big a hit as those in ATL. Lots of farms, so chickens, gardens, etc., are no problem. We have a lake right here in town, about 4-5 miles from where I live, and lots of creeks and rivers that are stocked with trout. The lake has bass. Not much to do entertainment-wise, if you're into that sort of thing, but I'm just a home body and ATL is only 2 hours away if I want to go there. Plus, we have a music hall with many big name country singers, local playhouses, plenty of festivals, and lots of movies are being shot here. Plenty to keep me busy. The weather is moderate. It sometimes gets cold in the winter, but winter is short, fall and spring long. Politically, there are few regs as the mountain folk are hearty and independent cusses who don't like people messing with their rights or telling them what they can and can't do with their land.
I'm an east coast girl and love the lush greenery of the mountains. Although I like to visit, I'd never want to live out west. Too dry and brown. I'm sure you'd consider the humidity here stifling, but most of us are used to it. When my daughter visits from CA, she gasps as she deplanes; says the air is too thick to breathe. But, that's ok ... it keeps the riff-raff away.
