We choose to incubate over broody hen obviously. We have more confidence using a controlled method although we can't always comfortably fit every quality inspected egg candidate into the bator.
So the balance of eggs give some of our broody girls purpose.
Just got done with another hatch. We are more successful with bators.

Our trusty b-girl had her hatch as well...

She is a good hen but clumbsy. 1 out of 5 eggs yielded life.
4 made it out of zip but :th.
The little guy is safe and sound in the toasty brooder with the bator batch.
Seems like we win more often incubating than Hen broody. But still use both methods.

I agree. I love letting broodies hatch and raise babies, but it isn't guaranteed foolproof or successful. With my last few batches I've been incubating in the house and then slipping them under the hen once they start to pip. That way I don't have to worry about clumsy chickens, eggs getting knocked out of the nest when others take over the box to lay, the nest box switch-a-roo, and so on.

And of course, if I know they are chicks that I am going to want to sell right away, I forgo the broody as I would feel too bad to pull all her chicks from her.
